The compact minivan Proton Exora was part of the Malaysian brand's production lineup from 2009 to 2023. Creation History

The development of minivans by the Malaysian company began in the 1990s. At that time, its model range consisted of sedans and hatchbacks, licensed copies of Mitsubishi passenger cars. The first practical result was the appearance of Juara, made in the format of Japanese "kei-cars", which was later produced until 2004 as the Mitsubishi Town Box Wide. Taking into account the experience gained, which turned out to be not too successful, in 2006 the development of this model began, which was initially created with regard to the preferences of Malaysian car enthusiasts. As part of this work, in cooperation with the South Korean LG CNS, a new platform with the P2 index was created. The name for the new model was chosen based on the results of a contest in which more than 250,000 people took part — Exora, a plant better known as West Indian jasmine.

Main Characteristics

The car belonged to the C segment in terms of its dimensions, with a length of 4.6 meters and a wheelbase of 2.73 meters. The platform limited the layout to a transverse engine arrangement, front-wheel drive only, and a chassis consisting of a combination of MacPherson struts at the front and a semi-dependent torsion beam at the rear. Under the hood was an alternative 4-cylinder inline engine with a volume of 1.5 liters of the CamPro family, developed jointly with the British Lotus. The 125-horsepower power unit was combined exclusively with a 4-range "automatic". At the start of sales, the car was available in two trim levels, differing from each other in the number of airbags, the presence of an audio system, wheel disks, and the type of transmission used.

In 2011, an updated version appeared, which externally stood out with other bumpers and plastic overlays on the thresholds, chrome decor, as well as a larger number of trim levels, and even the base version had significantly expanded equipment. In technical terms, the minivan differed in the presence in the line of a modification with a turbocharged engine, the first in the history of the Malaysian brand, an upgraded version of the power unit from the previous model. It did not surpass the "atmospheric" predecessor in terms of power, offering 138 hp, but offered much more traction — up to 205 Nm. It was fully available from 2000 rpm. In addition, the previous 4-speed "automatic" was replaced with a variator. The next significant update of the minivan took place in 2019. The car again slightly changed its appearance, receiving new bumpers and "transparent" rear lights. The previous number of trim levels was reduced to two. The external difference was decorative elements, which were made of black plastic for the base version, and had a chrome-plated coating for the more expensive one. In turn, the salon stood out with the GKUI multimedia system with an enlarged display and voice control, available for the top versions of the minivan.
