The Proton car brand belongs to the same-named company from Malaysia. Founded in May 1983, it became the country's only automobile manufacturer at that time. Currently, it is engaged in the development and production of passenger and commercial vehicles of its own design, as well as their assembly under license from other companies.

Creation History

Proton owes its existence to the Malaysian government, which in the late 1970s set the goal of creating its own automobile production. The project was approved in 1982, implying activity within the framework of a joint venture with the Japanese Mitsubishi. The company's first plant was built by July 1985, where serial production of the Proton Saga began. The 4-door sedan was a Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore of the second generation, equipped with a 1.3-liter engine. The car was so successful that the plant could not keep up with demand. By the middle of 1986, it dominated its segment, holding a market share of 64%. The following year, a hatchback with a more powerful Mitsubishi engine was added to the sedan, and in 1988, the export of both models to the British market began, where the Malaysian brand became the best-selling among the brands ever presented in the United Kingdom.

The brand gained the greatest popularity in the mid-1990s. Several models played a key role in this. One of them is the Proton Saga Iswara, a sedan built on the already outdated Mitsubishi platform at that time, but having a design of the exterior and interior of its own design. The car was very comfortable and extremely reliable, which predetermined its use as a taxi, and many instances continue to be operated in this capacity to this day. In 1993, another hit of the brand was presented - Wira. This sedan was a Mitsubishi Lancer of the 4th generation and had a range of 6 engines from the Japanese company with a volume of 1.3 to 2 liters, including not only gasoline but also a diesel engine, which was not used on any other Proton car. In 1995, the company began to master the more "premium" segment of medium-sized sedans, releasing the Proton Perdana, created on the basis of the Mitsubishi Eterna. Specifically for this model, the company mastered the serial production of an excellent 6-cylinder engine 6A12, which was its debut in this area. Previously, it produced exclusively 4-cylinder power units. Most of the models presented in the 1990s have survived in production to this day, representing, of course, much more modern cars.

Model Range

Today, the product line of the Malaysian brand consists of seven models. Mostly these are compact passenger cars and crossovers. Often, they use platforms of their own design, for example, SLX in the compact sedan Saga of the 4th generation. Some models are "clones" of cars of other brands. In particular, the Proton X90 is a Geely Haoyue, a mid-size crossover that uses both platforms and components of the Chinese brand.
