The compact hatchback MG 3 has been produced by the Chinese SAIC conglomerate since 2008. Initially, the car was a modified version of one of the Rover models, but subsequent generations were transferred to components developed by the Chinese owner of the British brand.

First Generation

The compact hatchback, presented in 2008, was a Rover Streetwise that had changed its name and production location after its production was discontinued in England in the spring of 2005. The car, under the terms of the MG Rover sale deal, could not be exported and was only available on the domestic market of China. Second Generation

In 2011, the second-generation car debuted. This time, it was created on a proprietary platform, featuring a wheelbase of 2500 mm, a front suspension with MacPherson struts, and a rear suspension with a beam and torsion bars. The engine range consisted of inline four-cylinder gasoline engines with volumes of 1.3 and 1.5 liters, producing 91 and 107 horsepower, respectively. Both power units were combined with a 5-speed manual transmission or a single-clutch "robot".

Third Generation

The third-generation car was presented in 2017. Essentially, it was a "revision of mistakes" of its predecessor, which was not distinguished by its attractive appearance. The problem was solved by a large-scale redesign, which made the hatchback easily recognizable in the stream. The effective exterior was emphasized by extremely bright body colors, as well as the possibility of ordering a British flag pattern on its roof. Unlike the exterior, the salon practically did not change, except for the instrument panel, which acquired classic features, as well as a different steering wheel. The front console stood out with an integrated 8-inch display, which could display an image from the rearview camera. In addition to it, the list of options included a sunroof and climate control. In technical terms, the car almost completely repeated its predecessor, including the engines, which were modernized and became significantly more powerful. Another change was the replacement of the single-clutch "robot" with a classic 4-speed "automatic".

Fourth Generation

In February 2024, the hatchback of the fourth generation debuted in the brand's model range. Unlike its predecessor, its development was carried out taking into account the preferences, first of all, of buyers from the Old World. The car has slightly increased in size in all directions, adding a few centimeters. At the start of sales, it was offered in a single version with a hybrid power plant. Under the hood was a "atmospheric" 4-cylinder engine with a volume of 1.5 liters, producing 102 horsepower and 128 Nm of torque, working on the Miller cycle and used as a constant current generator. The front wheels are driven by an electric motor integrated into a 3-speed automatic transmission, delivering up to 136 horsepower and 250 Nm. The internal combustion engine is connected during intense acceleration, increasing the power to 194 horsepower, as well as during uniform movement at high speed. In all other cases, priority is given to electric traction.

In terms of equipment, the hatchback stands out with the presence of a 7-inch instrument panel display and a 10.25-inch iSmart multimedia system screen with satellite navigation, as well as air conditioning and a rearview camera. The list of additional options is notable for cameras with a 360-degree view, artificial leather upholstery, and an adaptive "cruise" MG Pilot, which can automatically keep the car in the traffic lane. Depending on the year of production, the car was equipped with wheels with a diameter from 15 to 17 inches.
