History

The Lexus brand was created around the same time as its direct competitors from Nissan and Honda. The Lexus brand was created as part of a project with the codename F1, which involved designing a whole line of premium passenger cars. In May 1985, Toyota sent a team of specialists to the US, whose task was to study buyers of luxury cars. At the same time, prototype tests were carried out in various conditions, from North American highways to German "autobahns". The result of the research was the understanding of the need for a separate brand with a network of dealer centers that were not associated with the "parent" car brand. The creation of Lexus began in 1983 and lasted for 6 years. Several thousand people, united in 24 engineering groups, took part in the implementation of the project. About 450 prototypes were built, and the costs exceeded $1 billion. The result was the appearance of the LS 400 sedan and the 8-cylinder gasoline engine with a volume of 4 liters, which until recently was the key power unit of this Japanese brand. In parallel with it, the compact sedan ES 250 was sold, which was a copy of the Toyota Camry, as well as the SC 400 coupe, which had no "clones" in the lineup of the "parent" brand. Excellent technology and price, combined with a multi-million dollar advertising campaign at the launch of the brand, ensured its high sales and a decrease in sales of its main competitors. After one year of sales, Lexus in the US lost 29% and 19% of buyers for BMW and Mercedes-Benz, respectively. However, the largest number of new customers were former owners of Lincoln and Cadillac, which was due to the presence of an 8-cylinder V-shaped engine under the hood of the LS 400, a "classic of the genre".
