The Isuzu Bighorn was produced from 1981 to 2002. The vehicle was a full-size off-road vehicle of a classic design, initially intended for use primarily off paved roads. However, its concept was later significantly altered with the addition of comfort and ease of use on asphalt.

In 1983, the off-road vehicle underwent a significant modernization, featuring a 5-door version, as well as a more powerful 2.3-liter gasoline engine, developing 97 hp, in which the chain in the timing drive was replaced with a belt with Kevlar fibers. Three years later, when exports of the off-road vehicle to the North American market began, it received a more suitable 2.8-liter V6 gasoline engine, borrowed from the Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck.

Second Generation

In late 1991, the Japanese brand introduced the second-generation off-road vehicle, which significantly differed from its predecessor in both appearance and concept. The vehicle significantly increased in size and added comfort in everyday use, primarily on paved roads, becoming more versatile. At the start of sales, only the 5-door version with an extended wheelbase was available. The "short" 3-door modification appeared a year later. Another innovation was the engine range, which featured a 3.2-liter V6 gasoline engine, developing 177 hp. A 3.1-liter diesel engine with 125 hp was offered as a more reliable and economical alternative, designed for towing trailers, with 275 Nm of torque, which was available, if not from idle speed. Both versions had differences in transmission as well. Gasoline off-road vehicles offered a 4-speed "automatic" as an option, while their diesel counterparts were available with a 5-speed manual transmission and part-time four-wheel drive with differential locks on both axles. 16-inch disks and tires were standard for this off-road vehicle.
