The mid-size Acura ZDX crossover first appeared in the Japanese brand's lineup in 2009, remaining there until 2013, after which it was discontinued due to poor sales. Ten years later, this abbreviation was used again, but this time in relation to an electric vehicle, the first in the brand's history.

First Generation

The vehicle that debuted in 2009 was built on the platform of the second-generation Honda Pilot crossover, presented a year earlier. The model differed significantly from it with its extraordinary design, featuring a coupe-like silhouette. In technical terms, both vehicles were largely unified with each other. Under the hood was a single "aluminum" V6 engine with a volume of 3.6 liters, producing 300 horsepower and 366 Nm of torque, working in tandem with a 6-speed "automatic". At the same time, the base version had front-wheel drive, and the all-wheel drive system was offered as an additional option. In addition to it, for an extra fee, a navigation system with voice control, premium-class acoustics, rearview camera, "blind" spot sensors, adaptive cruise control with automatic braking function, as well as an electronically controlled IDS chassis, which automatically changed the stiffness of the shock absorbers depending on the mode selected by the driver, were available. The standard equipment offered a panoramic roof, genuine leather upholstery, and an audio system with a CD player and iPod connectivity function.

Second Generation

The revived crossover, after a 10-year absence, had no technical connection to its predecessor, differing from it in concept and use. It was built on the Ultium platform, developed by General Motors specifically for electric vehicles using a traction battery, electronics, and other components produced by this North American corporation. Honda's role in creating this model was limited to adjusting the settings of the Acura Watch electronic driver assistance system, which is part of the standard equipment. Despite this, the crossover turned out to be extremely close to other models of the Japanese brand, primarily in the design of the front part with a characteristic pentagon logo on the panel imitating the radiator grille.

Unlike the previous model, the crossover's interior is designed in a minimalist style, focused on conservative American buyers, featuring a climate control panel with physical buttons and a "floating" 11.3-inch display of the multimedia system above the front console. Its software contains various Google services, including satellite navigation. Another part of the standard equipment was an 18-channel Bang & Olufsen acoustics and surround-view cameras.

In technical terms, the crossover stands out for its rear-wheel drive. The base version uses a single electric motor with 345 horsepower. The more expensive Type S modification offers two electric motors, producing up to 507 horsepower at peak loads. If in the first case the crossover is equipped with a chassis with springs and amplitude-dependent shock absorbers, then in the second case it has pneumatic elements, electronically controlled shock absorbers with a function to change the ground clearance, as well as more powerful front brake mechanisms from Brembo. Both versions use a 102 kWh lithium-ion traction battery, which provides a range of 523 or 463 kilometers without recharging, respectively. The onboard charger is designed to work with DC power sources up to 190 kW. Depending on the configuration, the standard wheels for this crossover are 20 and 22 inches in diameter.
