The legendary VAZ brand, which became a real era for Soviet automobile manufacturing. The plant in Togliatti began to be built in 1966, and this is considered the date of birth of the trademark.

Beginning

In the post-war period, the machine-building industry in the USSR was poorly developed and could not meet the needs of the country's citizens. Therefore, the state initiated the construction of a new large-scale plant. For these purposes, the capacities of a huge number of productions not only in the country but also in friendly states were used. As a result, the production was built in 3.5 years (six years were allocated) and already in 1970, the first cars began to come off the assembly line. At that time, it was the VAZ 2101. Notably, a contract with the Italian Fiat was concluded to organize production. It was the model number 124 that became the prototype for the "penny". However, it underwent more than 800 upgrades, which were supposed to maximize the adaptation of the car to Soviet conditions (a more powerful engine was installed, the clearance was increased, the frame was strengthened, etc.). As a result, the 2101 became a truly popular car, which, throughout its history (until 1988), was produced in a circulation of 4.8 million. Moreover, from 1971, it was exported under the name LADA. In the USSR, it was called "Zhiguli".

Further development

The second model that gained popularity was the "six" - VAZ 2106. With a more powerful 1.6-liter engine and more modern systems, it was produced in a quantity of more than 4 million.

The legendary domestic off-road vehicle "Niva" began to be produced in 1977. The model turned out to be very successful. This was facilitated by the constant four-wheel drive, high clearance, and excellent maneuverability. Note that this car became the most exported in the history of the plant. In some years, up to 70% was sent to various countries of the world, including Japan, England, and others. The model is still being produced today, only under the name LADA 4x4, naturally, with modern equipment, but also with constant four-wheel drive.

Post-Soviet period

The difficult situation after the collapse of the USSR negatively affected the plant, which was able to present a new model, the 2110, only in 1995. It turned out to be competitive with the foreign cars that flooded the country. Therefore, following it, with an interval of 1-2 years, the 2111 and 2112 began to be released. And in 2007, the "Priora" appeared.

In 2008, during the crisis, the management found a partner among foreign companies, which became Renault. Against the background of this cooperation, state support was also organized. As a result, joint "creations" began to come off the assembly line - Granta, Largus, Kalina.

Modern era

To create competitive technology in our time, a transition to a new platform was needed. As a result, in 2010, the Lada Vesta appeared, and in 2015, the X-Ray. These cars became very popular and raised the prestige of the manufacturer.
