The Lancia Thema sedan was present in the production lineup of the Italian brand from 1984 to 2014. The car was positioned as a business class, where traditionally the models of the German "trio" dominated. The key difference from them was the combination of comfort, technology, and non-trivial engineering solutions. To a large extent, this was due to the wide variability of the Type Four platform options, which gave the Fiat concern the opportunity to bring to the market under different brands several models at once, each with its own special character. The model released in 1984 turned out to be iconic for the brand. Structurally, it represented a classic sedan with a length of around 4.6 meters with practically straight lines, which, however, did not prevent good aerodynamics - the air resistance coefficient was around 0.32, which was a competitive figure for the business segment at that time.
The Type Four platform combined design solutions with the Saab 9000, Fiat Croma, and Alfa Romeo 164, but the suspension settings at Lancia were most focused on comfort. In the front, an independent McPherson scheme was applied, and in the back - a lever-type design that provided stability at high speeds.
The engine range included in-line petrol engines with a volume of 2.0 to 2.8 liters, as well as diesel versions with turbocharging. A special attention-grabber was the Thema 8.32 version with a 3.0-liter Ferrari V8 engine - at that time, this was a rare example of using a supercar power unit in a representative sedan.
The salon was distinguished by an untypical design for the segment. The use of velour, natural wood, and soft forms of the front panel created an atmosphere of home comfort, rather than a strict business style. Ergonomics was focused on the driver, but at the same time did not sacrifice the comfort of passengers. Depending on the configuration, the car could be equipped with climate control, electric seat adjustment with memory, an advanced audio system, and a sunroof. In later versions, improved trim materials and additional noise insulation elements appeared. A distinctive feature was attention to detail: instrument lighting, the logic of the control layout, and the level of acoustic comfort corresponded to a more expensive segment than the model formally occupied.
American interpretation of the second generation
The second generation of the model was presented in 2011, 17 years after the production of the predecessor was discontinued. The novelty was one of the practical results of the merger of "Fiat" with the American "Chrysler". But in fact, it turned out to be a copy of the Chrysler 300, executed in the style of the Italian brand. The car represented a massive sedan with a length of more than 5 meters with rear-wheel drive, differing from the "original" in the changed design of the front and rear, as well as a partially redesigned interior. There were many more differences under the hood. In addition to American petrol V6 engines, there could be diesel engines of the same layout with turbocharging from the Italian VM Motori. The first ones were combined with the "automatic" 5G-Tronic from Mercedes, and the second ones - also with the "automatic", but with 8 steps from ZF.
