Lancia Delta – a compact hatchback from the Italian manufacturer, which was produced from 1979 and went through three generations of modernization. The main feature of the model was its participation in rally championships, where the "charged" versions of the car showed significant success.

History

The car, which debuted in 1979, did not stand out among the automotive variety of that time. It was an ordinary family car of the Golf class, which was quite popular both in its home country and on the international market. Everything changed in 1985, when the sports version S4 was presented. It was equipped with a 1.8-liter engine with a turbocharger and a mechanical supercharger. The engine produced 550 horsepower, and the acceleration to "hundred" took only 2.5 seconds. Agree, even now such indicators deserve respect. It was this modification that shone in international rallies. Along with a powerful engine, the car was equipped with a four-wheel drive system, which significantly improved its handling, although it had a rather complex structure. The career of the car ended in 1987, after the ban on participation in Group B racing (which included the "Delta").

The all-wheel drive serial model was released in 1986. Under the hood of the lightweight car was a two-liter engine with 165 horsepower, allowing it to reach "hundred" in 6.6 seconds. Due to the viscous coupling, the torque distribution was 56:44.

The first generation lasted until 1994. This is largely due to the car's sports career. During this period, about 50,000 units were produced and sold. The next generation was presented in 1993. It was based on the Fiat Tipo platform. Along with the five-door hatchback, a three-door version also appeared. The manufacturer now focused not on sports achievements, but on comfort. The car had only front-wheel drive, and under the hood, engines with 1.6, 1.8, and 2 liters were installed - gasoline. Moreover, there was a version with a turbocharged engine on 2 liters. Diesel was represented by one option on 1.9 liters with a turbocharger. They worked in pair with a five-speed "mechanics".

Present day

In 2008, a new generation was presented, which acquired more smooth features characteristic of modern automotive industry. It was based on the Fiat C platform. Under the hood, there were two gasoline engines with 1.4 and 1.8 liters, as well as "diesel" engines with 1.6, 1.9 (TwinTurbo) and 2.0 liters. As a transmission, a classic "mechanics" with 6 speeds was installed, as well as an "automatic" with 6 speeds. In addition, the manufacturer offered versions with a robotic gearbox. The model existed until 2014, after which it was withdrawn from production due to its unprofitability. But even now, there are still many units that are actively used around the world.
