The Jaguar XJS was produced from 1975 to 1996. The car belonged to the Grand Tourer category, being available as a 2-door coupe and convertible, becoming the "calling card" of the British brand for several decades.

First Iteration

The car, introduced in 1975, was developed starting from the late 1960s, featuring an extremely original design for its time. The elongated and maximally lowered hood was combined with massive pointed "fins" connecting the roof to the edge of the trunk lid. All these elements provided not only unusual aesthetic properties but also functionality, improving the aerodynamic characteristics of the body. The need to lengthen the hood was due to the engine - a 5.3-liter V12 gasoline engine, which was combined with both a manual and an automatic transmission. In the first series of cars, a 3-speed "automatic" from BorgWarner with a cast-iron body was used. Later, it was replaced by a lighter Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission from General Motors made of aluminum. In terms of concept and technical characteristics, the car was close to Italian supercars Lamborghini and Ferrari.

Second Iteration

In the summer of 1981, the British brand presented a coupe of the second iteration, which retained the effective styling of its predecessor. The key innovation was the engine - a new power unit of the same layout, but with an increased power of 295 hp and more modest fuel consumption. Two years later, more economical versions with an in-line 6-cylinder gasoline engine with a volume of 3.6 liters appeared in the lineup. In addition, a modification with a convertible body appeared, which was essentially a classic "targa", having non-retractable bars between the front posts and the rear glass, connected by a fabric top. The niche for it was located in place of the rear seats, as a result of which this version was strictly 2-seater.

Third Iteration

The model of the next iteration was presented in May 1991, essentially representing a modified version of its predecessor, which was created under the guidance of the new owner of the British brand - the American Ford Motor Company. This was reflected in the car's exterior, which, although it retained its similarity to its unusual-looking predecessors, was executed in a more conservative manner, losing, in particular, a significant portion of the "fins". In technical terms, it was distinguished by the presence of a modified V12 engine, which received a new fuel injection and fuel supply system, spark plugs, which allowed increasing the power to 280 hp with a slight decrease in fuel consumption. Less expensive versions received a new in-line 6-cylinder engine with a volume of 4 liters. A year later, a convertible with the same engine appeared in the lineup, and the power of the V12 was increased to 304 hp due to an increase in the working volume to 6 liters. Despite the high technical characteristics, the standard equipment for this car included 16-inch disks and tires.
