The South Korean company Daewoo Motors was founded in 1937 as National Motors. Until 1982, the firm changed its name several times until it was sold to the Daewoo Group, receiving the name by which it became known worldwide. In 2002, the parent company faced significant financial difficulties, which forced it to sell a significant portion of its automobile production assets to the North American General Motors for $1.2 billion, becoming its subsidiary. In 2011, it finally lost its former name. The company was renamed GM Korea, and the brand used for cars was replaced with Chevrolet.

History

It is accepted that the history of Daewoo began in 1937, when the National Motor company was established in Japanese Korea. In November 1962, the name was changed to Saenara Motor, which at that time was engaged in assembling the compact sedan Datsun Bluebird PL310, being the first enterprise in the country specializing in automobile production. Three years later, it was sold to Shinjin Industrial. The new owner organized a joint venture with the Japanese Toyota, and ten years later with General Motors. In 1982, there was another change of ownership, which became the Daewoo Group, but cooperation with the North American partner did not cease. Until 1996, all models of the brand used GM platforms, differing from them in the name on the hood, as well as in appearance. In the late 1980s, the tradition of attracting Italian body shops to develop car designs was established. In 1990, the Daewoo Espero was presented, the exterior of which was created by Bertone. Another iconic model for the brand with an Italian appearance was the Lanos. The urban compact presented at the end of 1997 was created with the participation of Italdesign. In turn, another car hit from Daewoo, Matiz, was drawn in the studio of Giorgio Giugiaro. Nevertheless, despite the release of extremely successful models in the 1990s, the Korean automaker in 1999 found itself in a very difficult financial situation due to problems with the owner, Daewoo Group. It was forced to sell the entire automotive division, which in itself was also a problematic operation. After several attempts, only General Motors agreed to acquire the assets of Daewoo Motor for $1.2 billion. And this was not without financial assistance from the South Korean government. 32% of the shares of the newly formed GM Daewoo belonged to KDB - the Korean Development Bank.

Daewoo in Russia

The Korean brand entered Russia in 1998, organizing assembly at the TagAZ plant. Cars were sold on the local market using the "Doninvest" brand.
