Tires on Alfa Romeo 164 (Альфа Ромео)
The Alfa Romeo 164 sedan was produced from 1987 to 1998. The car was positioned as one of the flagship models of the Italian brand, belonging to the representative class.History of creation
The development of the car began in 1980 as part of the Project 156, which involved the creation of a common platform for several models. It was later used in the Fiat Croma, Saab 9000, and Lancia Thema. The initial variant assumed a classic layout for this class with a front-mounted power unit and rear-wheel drive. However, already in 1981, after the reduction of financial support from the Italian government, the owner of this brand, this decision was revised to reduce costs. As a result, the car received a more affordable production version of the platform with front-wheel drive. In addition, it was necessary to revise the body design. The choice was made in favor of the option proposed by Pininfarina with a characteristic wedge-shaped profile of the front part, which reduced the air resistance coefficient to 0.30. Subsequently, this style was used in the Alfa Romeo 33 and 155. However, at the stage of running tests, body panels from prototypes of the 156th project were used to confuse journalists.Design and equipment
For the first time, the car with the final design variant was shown in 1986 as the Vivace concept. In addition to the wedge-shaped silhouette, it was distinguished by the fact that a "digit" was widely used in its development. This made it possible to obtain a very rigid body with a relatively small weight. Despite the "kinship" with the Lancia Thema, Fiat Croma, and Saab 9000 in terms of the platform, the sedan stood out favorably against their background with a unique front suspension architecture, providing the "signature" manageability for models of this brand with the withdrawal of the inner rear wheel when dynamically passing a sharp turn. In turn, an important difference from the predecessors was the noticeably better build quality and the use of galvanized steel in the suspension details and body panels. In terms of equipment, the sedan stood out with the presence of a larger number of electronic systems than before, including three on-board computers that controlled the engine, air conditioning system, and instrument panel, which displayed an increased amount of information. Top-end versions offered natural leather upholstery, climate control, as well as electronically controlled chassis with several operating modes to choose from by the driver. Depending on the version, the sedan had standard discs and tires with a mounting diameter from 15 to 17 inches.
