First "soy" tires by Bridgestone

13 september 2012
Bridgestone has become the first company in the world to introduce a concept tire that uses an entirely new material for the tire industry, namely soybean oil. The percentage of soybean oil in the tires is ten percent.

The first "soy" tires were the Firestone Radial Deep Tread tires for agricultural equipment, which were presented at the recently held Farm Progress Show in Iowa, United States. The rubber compound of this model contains 40 kilograms of soybean oil (out of a total mass of 400 kilograms).

The manufacturers of the innovative tire are confident that soybean oil will be able to replace all petroleum-based oils in the future. In addition, according to research, it can increase the durability of tires by ten percent. Sales and Marketing Director Tom Rogers shared his opinion that if this project is successfully promoted, the production of "soy" tires should be put into mass production by the beginning of next year. And by the end of 2013, it is planned that all agricultural tires of the company will be produced using this ingredient.

The company also reported that when processing soybeans, about five kilograms of oil are obtained from one bushel (35 cubic centimeters). That is, to produce one Firestone Radial Deep Tread tire, it was necessary to process approximately 280 cubic centimeters of soybeans.
