Toyo Open Country M/T
Tire specifications
DescriptionDescription Toyo Open Country M/T
The all-season passenger tire Toyo Open Country M/T is designed for full-size SUVs and pickups. Its key feature is a very wide range of applications. This tire is equally well-suited for driving on both paved roads and rough terrain throughout the year. This fully corresponds to the meaning of the words enclosed in the M/T abbreviation (Middle Terrain).
Open design of shoulder areas
One of the characteristic features of this model is the shoulder areas. They are distinguished by an open design containing a large number of very high blocks. When driving off-road, these tread elements turn into mud catchers, providing increased traction. At the same time, their multi-radius profile contributes to the rejection of dirt, stones, and snow.
Reinforced frame
Since the Toyo Open Country M/T was initially designed for operation, including outside of paved roads, a number of measures were taken to increase its reliability. In particular, Japanese tire manufacturers significantly strengthened the frame by adding three additional layers of polyester. Thanks to the physical properties of this material, it was possible to significantly increase the resistance of the tire to punctures and cuts. In addition, the additional layers of polyester, located in the central part of the tread, increased its stiffness, which had a very beneficial effect on handling when driving on ordinary roads, as well as on cargo capacity, which increased significantly.
Aggressive tread pattern
One of the distinctive features of the tread pattern of this model is an aggressive design. The Toyo Open Country M/T contains four longitudinal ribs formed from a large number of massive blocks. The tread elements located in the central part of the tread are made in a hook-like shape, abundant with multiple edges and corners. In combination with the large distance and depth of the tread, such a structure of the center of the tread pattern provides the tire with excellent traction properties off-road. At the same time, the direction of the block arrangement made it possible to improve performance on highway roads with asphalt pavement.
Full-depth lamellas
On the surface of each of the blocks of the tread pattern, there is at least one lamella cut through its entire depth. These design elements are intended to provide additional traction properties when driving on wet roads. During movement, they form a large number of edges that not only cling to the asphalt but also direct the water on its surface into drainage channels.
Main features of the Toyo Open Country M/T tire
- an open design of the shoulder area, containing a large number of high blocks with an original profile, provides more confident movement on rocky and earthy soils, as well as on snow;
- three additional layers of polyester in the frame design made it more durable, and the central part of the tread - stiff, which improved handling on asphalt, as well as increased cargo capacity;
- an aggressive symmetrical non-directional tread pattern with a large number of hook-shaped blocks in the central part provides confident behavior, both on ordinary asphalt roads and off-road;
- good traction properties on wet asphalt, thanks to a branched system of drainage channels and a large number of lamellas located throughout the tread.

Purchased in size 265/75R16.
Drove throughout the summer season in 2018. Mainly asphalt, but also tested on rocky roads and in mud.
In mud, even without being treaded, it performs perfectly, and where it doesn’t go - the car is already hanging on the bridges. At one atm pressure - it crunches adequately, doesn’t fall off the rim.

Spent a long time searching for tires, stopped on this model. Completely satisfied! Didn't feel a sharp increase in noise, the car stably holds the road at high speeds, is not worse than a mudguard (and is much cheaper) - after 5,000 km didn't notice any particular wear (about 80% asphalt).

I was pleasantly surprised by the universality, on 2.2+ it is an AT, on 0.5 it is a very confident MT.
I had to brake hard on a Niva - it stands like it's embedded in the ground and the wheels don't lock up (no ABS).
I drove into a deep puddle at 100 km/h at night - it swerved, but even stayed in its lane.

- Traction properties in mud
- poor ride comfort
low traction properties on wet asphalt
high weight
high rolling resistance
- The tires performed fairly well off-road - especially in mud, allowing you to drive both "in a tug" and with intense wheelspin. On sand and gravel, the traction capabilities are more modest, and on the highway, handling had to be corrected a couple of times by turning the wheel to the limit! And on asphalt, there is a lack of grip - especially on wet surfaces. These are one of the stiffest tires in our test, and at the same time, they are noticeably heavier than the others and more resistant to rolling. The fact that these tires are not designed for asphalt is also indirectly evidenced by the speed index: unlike the other tires, which are designed for a speed of 160 km/h, the "maximum" speed of these tires is limited to 150 km/h.
