The Pirelli Winter Ice Zero studded tire is one of the latest innovations from the world-renowned Italian tire giant. Its primary target audience is owners of powerful passenger cars of various classes, including crossovers and heavy SUVs. Since the tire is oriented towards the premium segment, it's no surprise that the latest technologies available to Pirelli were applied in its design.
Twin-stud technology
One of the most notable innovations is the Pirelli Dual Stud technology. It features a composite stud design with an elongated core as its main characteristic. This allowed for the creation of additional sharp edges, resulting in a significant increase in traction on icy road surfaces. The core is made of tungsten carbide, making it exceptionally durable and able to withstand any loads throughout the tire's lifespan. Another design feature of the twin-stud is the flat surface of the internal tungsten insert. This significantly reduced its wear, ensuring that the tire's traction on ice remains at its initial level until the tread is completely worn out.
Maximum traction on snowy roads
Italian tire manufacturers chose not to abandon the time-tested V-shaped tread pattern design, which has excellent characteristics on road surfaces with very low friction coefficients. They are not alone in this, as a similar scheme for arranging tread elements is used by almost all leading tire manufacturers. However, unlike most of them, Italian tire engineers found opportunities for significant improvement in its effectiveness.
First and foremost, they abandoned the classic division of the tread pattern into longitudinal ribs. Instead, they divided the tread into separate functional zones, each with specific functional capabilities. There are two such zones on the Winter Ice Zero tread - the central part and the shoulder areas.
The central part of the Pirelli Winter Ice Zero tire tread consists of many massive blocks of complex polygonal shape. Their large size makes them very rigid, which, in combination with the direction of their edges, allows the tire to demonstrate excellent directional stability, especially when driving at high speeds on slippery roads. In addition, the blocks in the central part of the tread form many sharp edges, allowing for dynamic acceleration on snow.
The shoulder areas of the tread have a classic design, featuring two rows of blocks arranged at a right angle to the direction of movement. Currently, only such a design guarantees maximum braking efficiency not only on snow but also on any other surface with a low friction coefficient. Moreover, the presence of such a number of perpendicularly arranged edges in this part of the tread allows the tire to confidently move through deep snow.
Multifunctional drainage system
The Pirelli Winter Ice Zero drainage system is one of the key components that provide the tire with a range of advantages. When in contact with a snowy road surface, the numerous drainage grooves, due to their large volume, allow the tread to retain a significant amount of snow, making the traction even more reliable.
In addition, the presence of a large number of voluminous drainage channels in various directions provides increased resistance to aquaplaning and slush planing. This feature makes the process of driving in unfavorable road conditions significantly safer.
Increased number of lamellae in the new Pirelli tire
Unlike previous models, the Pirelli Winter Ice Zero features a 20% increase in the number of lamellae. These special tread elements form countless additional sharp edges during movement, allowing the new Italian tire to demonstrate excellent traction on snow. At the same time, the wavy walls of the lamellae, when in contact with the road surface, close tightly between themselves. As a result, the tread block becomes significantly stiffer, improving handling characteristics on dry asphalt.
Modified Ice Zero rubber compound
Another innovation in the Winter Ice Zero design is the rubber compound. Thanks to the introduction of new components and the application of new preparation technologies, Italian tire engineers were able to create more robust intermolecular bonds. In practice, this means that the tire's characteristics remain consistent over a very wide temperature range. Simply put, the tire remains as elastic in freezing temperatures as it is at positive temperatures. Additionally, the rubber compound has increased resistance to high-temperature effects.
