The Pirelli Winter Carving Edge passenger tire is a logical continuation of the very popular Winter Carving model. Compared to its predecessor, the new model has significantly improved all basic operational characteristics, both on dry and snowy and icy surfaces. The range of sizes has been significantly expanded and now starts from 175/65R14 and ends at 275/45R20. At the same time, some sizes have several variants of execution - with studs, without studs, as well as with increased load-carrying capacity, which allows this model to be used on some models of SUVs and crossovers.
Italian tire tread design
Like its predecessor, the tread of this model is equipped with a V-shaped symmetrical directional pattern, which has proven its high efficiency in harsh winter conditions. As befits a high-quality tire Pirelli Winter Carving Edge, its tread has a classic five-rib design. In the center of the tread, there is a wide longitudinal rib, which, due to its integral design, is distinguished by a high degree of stiffness. In addition, the central longitudinal rib is made in the shape of a "Christmas tree", which is one of the most effective solutions, providing the tire with excellent directional stability and excellent braking efficiency on snowy and icy surfaces. The other two longitudinal ribs, located nearby, are represented by two rows of separate blocks. Their massive size and configuration, rich in many edges and sharp corners, provide excellent traction with any slippery surface in all directions.
Another undeniable advantage of the V-shaped design is the large size of the contact patch area. Due to this, excellent traction is ensured, and thanks to the stability of its size, regardless of changes in the characteristics of the road surface, reliable behavior is ensured in various road conditions.
The shoulder areas of the tread are, in essence, two additional rows of blocks having a quadrangular shape, located transversely relative to the direction of movement. This structure allows the tire to feel more confident when overcoming deep snow.
Confidence on ice with Pirelli tires
The tire owes its excellent characteristics on icy surfaces to a whole complex of technical solutions. In particular, the tread is equipped with more than a hundred steel studs, which, due to their location, form 12 rows, which not only significantly improved traction on ice but also significantly reduced the noise from the studs.
Another component that provides confident behavior on ice is the numerous zigzag-shaped lamellas, which formed an additional huge number of sharp edges, effectively gripping even the micro-roughness on the surface of the ice.
The third component is the patented Adaptive Compound Technology. Under this term, an innovative composition of the rubber compound is hidden, which has proven itself well on the predecessor - the Winter Carving model. The distinctive feature of this rubber compound is its ability to maintain the elasticity of the tread at an optimal level, regardless of the temperature of the environment and the surface of the road. Such amazing characteristics were achieved thanks to the inclusion in the composition of the rubber compound of three different types of polymers of the latest generation. As a result, the Pirelli Winter Carving Edge tire remains elastic in a very wide temperature range, starting from plus 7 degrees and ending at minus 40 degrees Celsius.
EDGE rings
The main difference between this model and its predecessor is the presence around the depressions near the mounting seats for the studs of several rigid rubber rings. As you know, when driving on ice, due to the friction of the tire tread on its surface, a water film is formed, which significantly reduces the coefficient of friction. These rubber rings, located around the studs, easily break the water film, which improves the tire's traction on the icy surface.

The impression of the tires itself is positive. They are noisy, but this is not a problem in the winter. I drove on these tires both on winter highways and in slush and almost on ice. The behavior on asphalt is no different from summer tires, while on ice and snow, it is like that of excellent quality winter tires. It brakes very well!
