The Saab 900 was present in the model lineup of the Swedish brand from 1978 to 1998. The car was positioned as a "premium" vehicle, differing from most analogs with its non-trivial design and technical features.

First Generation

The car, presented in 1978, largely repeated its predecessor with the index 99, including unusual technical solutions. First and foremost, this is the 4-cylinder engine installed at an angle of 45 degrees, to the lower part of which the transmission was attached, and the torque was transmitted through a gear chain. Another feature was the body with a characteristic elongated front part. This made it possible to increase the space in the engine compartment and improve passive safety. The middle part and the rear were practically identical to the previous model, remaining unchanged until the mid-1980s. Also borrowed from the 99th was the suspension with double levers at the front and a semi-dependent beam at the rear, attached to the body not only through springs and shock absorbers but also through Panhard rods, which provided excellent handling and comfort. Another such solution was the shape of the door opening and the door itself. When closed, these elements formed a very strong connection, increasing the body's stiffness on bending and torsion, and when opened, allowed passengers to exit the car without stepping over the threshold.

The interior stood out with a deep bend of the front console, repeating the shape of the windshield. All controls and the layout of the instrument panel were selected with regard to the frequency of their use, which guaranteed minimal distraction of the driver from the road, allowing the use of peripheral vision for control.

Second Generation

The car of the next generation was presented in 1994. It used the GM2900 platform, on which a large number of models of brands belonging to the General Motors corporation were created, in particular, the Opel Vectra A. For this reason, the car lost a significant part of the technical features that distinguished its predecessor. It represented a classic mass model of that time with a transverse engine and front-wheel drive. In essence, the only significant difference was the engine range, which still consisted of B-series engines, but in a modernized version. These were in-line gasoline "fours" with a volume of 2 and 2.3 liters. The 2-liter engine was available, including with a turbocharger and the proprietary Saab Trionic 5 control system, which adjusted the engine's operation depending on the fuel quality, which in early versions developed 180 horsepower. For such versions, a mechanical transmission with a Sensonic clutch was available, which allowed switching between 5 gears using a hydraulic drive activated when the lever was moved on the central tunnel.

In terms of equipment, the car stood out against the background of "soplatформенных" models with much better equipment.
