The Saab 9-3 is a compact executive car produced from 1998 to 2014, representing the successor to the 900 model. The car's name was pronounced as "nine-three" to avoid association with the 93 model, which was produced by the Swedish brand from 1955 to 1960.

Initial Version

The first production models of the car were released in 1998. It was built on the GM2900 platform, representing a deeply modernized version of the 900 model in its second generation, presented four years earlier. Compared to its predecessor, it had a more aggressive exterior design, revised suspension settings, and more "sharp" steering. The model lineup included 3- and 5-door hatchbacks, as well as a convertible. Another difference from the predecessor was the strengthened body structure, especially in the area of the front struts and door openings. Its basis was the updated gasoline engine with the B204 index, which was equipped with a low-pressure turbocharger, producing 154 horsepower. For the North American market, the engines received a more powerful turbine and 200 horsepower. Later, the car became equipped with a diesel engine from Opel. In 1999, the manufacturer presented the "charged" Viggen version, which was equipped with a modified B235R engine with a volume of 2.3 liters, producing 225 horsepower in early versions and 230 horsepower in later versions. This used a Mitsubishi-developed turbocharger, an increased-volume intercooler, a straight-through exhaust system, and a lowered, more rigid suspension. Another difference was the 5-speed manual transmission, which could determine the amount of torque, reducing the risk of damage to transmission components.

2nd Generation

In the summer of 2002, production of the second-generation car began. It was built on the "global" Epsilon platform from General Motors, like the entire lineup of compact executive cars from Opel and Chevrolet. For this reason, the car was offered as a sedan, station wagon, and convertible. Nevertheless, there was room for unique solutions. First and foremost, this is the third version of the "active" head restraints, which prevent passenger injury in rear-end collisions, as well as a special rear suspension design that reduces insufficient turning when braking sharply. No less significant changes occurred under the hood. A 2-liter gasoline engine Ecotec from Opel Vectra appeared there. It was available in several versions, differing from each other in terms of turbocharger performance and developed power. It worked in conjunction with a 5- or 6-speed manual transmission, or with a 5-range "automatic". Diesel power units were represented by a 1.9-liter engine from Fiat, which was later replaced by a more powerful 2.2 TiD. In 2008, all-wheel drive versions appeared, which were also "borrowed" from GM, as well as with a "large" V6 engine with a volume of 2.8 liters and a power of 250 horsepower, which was equipped with the Aero modification.
