The Australian automobile brand has its roots in the mid-19th century. In 1852, James Alexander Holden emigrated from British Staffordshire to South Australia. Four years later, he founded a company in Adelaide that produced horse saddles and harnesses. By 1905, it had become a family business under the management of the founder's grandson, who actually turned it into an automobile company. In 1908, the Holden company began to repair car upholstery, and from 1914, it started to modify old car chassis, installing bodies from other models. Trade restrictions introduced after 1917 forced the company to start producing its own car bodies. This led to the establishment of a new company, Holden's Motor Body Builders. By 1923, the company was producing 12,000 bodies, which were used in the assembly of Ford cars until the North American concern built its own plant in Geelong.

Holden and GM

In 1924, Holden became a GM supplier, having acquired a new plant by that time. The North American partner founded its own division in Australia in 1926, which had more than 10 assembly plants at its disposal. And only Holden was the only independent company that assembled cars and produced bodies for them. Unfortunately, the "Great Depression" led to a significant decline in production volumes. From the initial 34,000 units of products in 1930, the company produced only 1,651 car bodies a year later. In 1931, the company came under the control of GM, forming General Motors-Holden. At the same time, all General Motors assets in Australia were transferred to Holden's management.
