Bentley Continental has been produced since 1952, representing a car for high-speed travel with comfort. During its serial production, there were only a few models developed directly by Bentley Motors. Starting from the 1960s, the brand's cars were copies of similar Rolls-Royce models. And only since 1991, the name has been used for a coupe that differed in concept from the cars of the "parent" brand.

Creation History

The model owes its existence to David Plastow, the managing director of Rolls-Royce in the early 1980s. He considered it promising to use the Bentley brand for cars with the initial concept, i.e., for traveling at high speed in very comfortable conditions. The first practical result of the development was the Project 90 concept, shown in 1985 and received warmly enough to continue working on a coupe not for Bentley, but for Rolls-Royce. At that time, the company was actively engaged in developing a successor to the Corniche model, which used design solutions from Project 90. Nevertheless, work on creating a coupe for Bentley continued. In 1986, a design project for a 2-door coupe was developed with a significantly better drag coefficient than similar Rolls-Royce models - 0.37. Additionally, the exterior effectively masked the car's dimensions, which were longer than the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Main Features

The car presented in 1991 was a sports coupe that stood out for its large size and weight. For this reason, a 6.75-liter V8 gasoline engine with a Garrett turbocharger and 325 horsepower was used as the power unit. Most of the torque was available at 2000 rpm. The engine worked in conjunction with a new 4-speed automatic transmission from GM at the time. Another feature was the use of self-leveling hydraulic suspension with electronic control. Moreover, changing its settings occurred synchronously with changing the transmission and engine operating mode. This significantly reduced the impact of the car's weight on handling, providing a high level of ride comfort.

Since January 2003, the British brand has been under the control of the German concern Volkswagen. The coupe presented in the same year was created on the D1 platform of this manufacturer and was no longer technically related to the previous model. However, it retained its concept. This was still a very large car, executed in the same style as its predecessor, but much more powerful. It was equipped with a 6-liter W12 with two turbochargers, producing 560 horsepower. Already in the standard configuration, the coupe had a permanent all-wheel drive system, one of the Torsen variants. Another fundamental difference from the predecessor was the conveyor assembly, although with a large number of manual operations. This became the main factor that allowed the price to be reduced by more than 2 times and significantly expanded the circle of buyers, especially in our country, where this model has a fairly stable audience.
