The car first appeared in public in 2012 as the Bentley EXP 9 F concept. It was built on the modular MLB platform developed by Volkswagen and was equipped with a 6-liter gasoline W12 engine with 600 horsepower. This combination was preserved in the production models. However, the car's initial design was significantly revised to achieve more traditional SUV proportions and reduce the number of elements executed in a retro style.

Initially, the car was only available with a 6-liter gasoline W12 engine with two turbochargers, which provided acceleration to the first "hundred" in 4 seconds. The control system allowed for the shutdown of half of the cylinders during steady driving. Starting from 2017, the manufacturer began offering a diesel modification with a Volkswagen-developed V8, but only available in this crossover. The 4-liter engine allowed acceleration to 100 km/h only slightly slower than the W12 version – in 4.5 seconds. In 2018, a modification with a 4-liter gasoline V8 with two chargers appeared, which preserved the high dynamics of the crossover while making it quite economical – 12 liters per 100 km in the combined cycle. In the same year, the engine range was supplemented with a hybrid power plant consisting of a gasoline V6 and a traction electric motor with a total power of 443 horsepower. At the same time, the 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery allowed for a distance of up to 51 km on electric traction.

In the summer of 2020, the crossover underwent a restyling, mainly affecting the lighting devices, the shape of the exhaust system pipes, as well as the windshield wipers, which received heating and 22 nozzles in each element. Additionally, the second-row seats received a new frame and tilt mechanism, which allowed increasing the knee space by 10 cm. In terms of technology, the significant innovation was the absence of the W12 engine for the standard model, instead of which a modified version of the gasoline V8 is offered, from which it was possible to "take" 550 horsepower. The 12-cylinder engine remained available for the "charged" Speed version, but after changes in the design, its power is 635 horsepower.
