Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is an electronic system designed to monitor the air pressure inside the pneumatic tires on various types of vehicles.
A TPMS can provide real-time tire pressure information to the driver of the vehicle, either via a gauge, a pictogram display, or a simple low-pressure warning light.
TPMS are provided both at an original equipment (OE) and an aftermarket level by many manufacturers.
The safety benefits of TPMS have prompted the U.S. Transportation Secretary to issue a statement in favor of TPMS in 2005.
These systems are mandated for all new vehicles sold after 2007 and after November 2014 in the EU for new passenger vehicles (M1) and for vehicles with a Maximum Authorized Mass (MAM) of 3,500 kilograms.
They are required to alert the driver of under-inflation through a warning light on the dashboard and, if a vehicle is equipped with a telematics system, also a warning to the authorities.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states in their TPMS document that the TPMS rule requires the vehicle's TPMS to warn the driver in the following situations:
- The tire is under-inflated by 25% or more, or when the tire pressure has fallen by 25% or more from the vehicle manufacturer's recommended cold inflation pressure for the vehicle's tires.
- The TPMS malfunction indicator comes on and stays on, indicating that a malfunction has occurred in the TPMS.- Size:
