The summer passenger tire Yokohama Advan Sport V105 is the result of close cooperation between one of the leading tire manufacturers and Daimler. This tire was developed based on the flagship model of the Advan Sport V103 line. Tires created by order of the German manufacturer are included in the primary equipment of Mercedes-Benz SLK and SLS models, as well as a number of other German premium sports car manufacturers. This model is produced in 8 sizes, starting from 205/55R16 and ending with 245/40R17.
Tread pattern design
Compared to the V103 model, the tread pattern design of this tire has undergone significant changes, mainly related to the requirements of Daimler. This model is equipped with a tread with an asymmetric directional pattern, which differs in the different ratio of positive and negative profile on the outer and inner sides of the tread.
Since one of the requirements of the German automaker was to reduce rolling resistance, the tire's tread is equipped with five massive longitudinal ribs. At the same time, three longitudinal ribs located in the central part of the tread differ in a solid structure, which gave these tread elements a high degree of stiffness. Due to this solution, it was possible not only to significantly reduce rolling resistance but also to significantly improve directional stability. In addition, the rigid longitudinal ribs made it possible to achieve the lightning-fast and clear reactions of the Yokohama Advan Sport V105 tire to steering wheel turns, which brought the characteristic of handling the trademark sports features for the entire ADVAN line. Another feature of the central part of the tread is the diagonal notches made in the longitudinal ribs. Due to this, high efficiency of acceleration is ensured, especially on wet surfaces, since the contact patch has a large number of sharp edges of adhesion at any given time.
The design of the shoulder areas was created with the expectation of tire operation at very high speeds and was accordingly strengthened. At the same time, the profile of the shoulder areas has a small radius, which made it possible to achieve a number of important advantages. Firstly, a large contact patch area is ensured, which made it possible to significantly increase the tire's grip with the dry road surface. Secondly, the high stiffness of the shoulder areas in combination with their small-radius profile made it possible to achieve a practically rectangular shape of the contact patch, which significantly increased the resistance of the tread to uneven wear due to the optimal distribution of load on the contact patch.
It is also impossible not to note the block structure of the shoulder areas, the blocks of which have a rectangular shape and are arranged almost at a right angle to the direction of movement. Since, when the car slows down, the greatest load falls on the shoulder areas of the tread, the presence of many sharp edges in this part, arranged transversely, significantly increases the effectiveness of braking.
Exceptional confidence in rainy conditions
Like all Advan sport models, this tire demonstrates exceptional grip and handling characteristics in rainy conditions, providing a high level of safety when driving at any speed. Such abilities have appeared due to the equipping of the tread pattern with an unusually productive drainage system. Its effectiveness is largely due to the four longitudinal water-removing grooves, which have quite impressive dimensions, thanks to which they can accommodate a fairly large volume of water. Then this water is quickly removed to the outside through the transverse grooves of the shoulder areas of the tread. A distinctive feature of the longitudinal grooves of the Yokohama Advan Sport V105 tire is their multifunctionality. Thanks to the Groove-in-Groove technology, their walls are equipped with a multitude of small grooves designed to reduce tire heating, as well as to provide a more even distribution of load on the contact patch.
Durable and lightweight carcass
The tire, belonging to the Ultra-High Performance category, is distinguished by a very lightweight and very durable carcass. Such an unusual combination was achieved thanks to the use of synthetic materials of the latest generation in its design. The basis of the carcass is a two-layer steel metal cord, covered with three layers of nylon fibers wound according to the seamless technology. Directly under the shoulder areas, there is a special pad that provides softness and comfort. The tire's sidewalls are reinforced with a special rigid filler, which allows the tire to be more reliably fixed on the wheel disk.
Changed rubber compound
Compared to the V103 model, when manufacturing the tread, a rubber compound is used, which differs significantly increased content of silicon-containing components. Due to this, it was possible to significantly improve grip on a wet road. In addition, the rubber compound contains natural orange oil, which significantly increased the resistance of the tread to wear.
Main features of the Yokohama Advan Sport V105 tire
- Optimized asymmetric directional tread pattern provides a unique balance of sports handling and comfort;
- Phenomenal resistance to aquaplaning allowed to achieve exceptional grip on wet surfaces;
- Excellent fuel economy due to reduced rolling resistance, thanks to the massive size of the five longitudinal tread ribs;
- Amazing combination of low weight with excellent strength and elasticity is provided by a multi-layer carcass made from the latest materials.
