The Michelin Latitude Cross summer tire is designed for crossover owners who occasionally want to leave the paved road, but don't want to sacrifice comfort for uncompromising off-road capability. This model, produced by one of the leaders in the global tire industry, is available in more than two dozen sizes, ranging from 195/80R15 to 255/55R18. This range of sizes makes it easy to find the right tire for almost any modern SUV, crossover, or pickup truck.
Mud Catcher Tread Design
Since the French tire maker aimed to create a tire for off-road driving that still offers the comfort of on-road models, the tread features a directional pattern with an asymmetrical design.
One of the distinctive features of the tread pattern is the large number of cutting edges formed by the numerous tread blocks. This tread pattern, more typical of winter models, significantly improves traction on various road surfaces. Additionally, the large number of tread blocks enhances braking efficiency, especially on slippery surfaces like wet grass.
The term Mud Catcher refers to the special design of the shoulder areas of the tread, divided into separate blocks by drainage channels. These blocks have a distinctive arrow-shaped form with a large number of cutting edges, allowing for excellent traction on soft, unstable terrain and other slippery surfaces.
As mentioned earlier, this model is not only distinguished by its excellent off-road capabilities but also by a very high level of comfort on paved roads, unusual for tires in this category. This was achieved through the effective combination of a flexible rubber compound and carefully selected tread block sizes and shapes. The tread blocks also feature a unique curved shape, obtained through computer modeling, which is why the tread design is called Silent Tread.
Terrain-Proof Rubber Compound
As is well known, one of the most important components of any modern tire is the rubber compound. Its composition determines almost all the main working characteristics of the Michelin Latitude Cross tire. When developing the rubber compound for this model, the company's specialists used the same technologies and materials that were previously used for the production of tires for special equipment, in particular, for earthmoving machines.
Thanks to the large size of the drainage channels, the tire's tread easily removes dirt, gravel, stones, and other foreign objects that accumulate during off-road driving, which significantly improves off-road performance. Additionally, the rubber compound gives the tire very high resistance to aggressive external influences, including punctures and cuts. It's also worth noting the increased resistance to tread wear, thanks to special components in the rubber compound, which has a positive effect on the tire's durability.
Two Types of Sipes
When creating this model, the specialists at the French company aimed to give the Michelin Latitude Cross tire worthy characteristics in various road conditions. One of the technical solutions aimed at solving this problem was the use of two different types of sipes in the tread design: straight and S-shaped.
The straight sipes, located on the surface of the tread blocks, are distinguished by their increased length. Their main functional purpose is to provide reliable traction in rainy conditions. On a wet surface, the principle of straight sipes, which have a curved shape in this case, is similar to the operation of ordinary windshield wipers.
The S-shaped sipes allow for additional traction on slippery surfaces. This is achieved by forming numerous sharp edges that, penetrating the water film on the road surface, effectively grip any irregularity. At the same time, the S-shaped form allows for more reliable fixation of the sipe walls between themselves, increasing the structural rigidity of the tread block, which, in turn, significantly improves handling on dry roads.
Key Features of Michelin Latitude Cross
- The asymmetrical design of the directional tread pattern Silent Tread provides excellent traction on wet grass, sand, and mud while maintaining a high level of comfort on paved roads;
- The special shape of the Mud Catcher shoulder blocks, which give the tire excellent off-road capability in mud, snow, and sand;
- Excellent self-cleaning properties of the tread, thanks to a developed system of drainage channels with large sizes.
