The Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance summer tire is one of the latest innovations from the North American manufacturer. Unlike other representatives of this line of tires, this model is designed exclusively for powerful passenger cars. The high performance of this tire is evidenced by the speed indices assigned to it - H, V, W, and Y.
WearControl
Perhaps the key feature of this model is the WearControl technology. Its application in this tire is due to the desire to provide an ideal balance between high traction characteristics in any conditions with other brand features of the entire family of energy-efficient models, namely - durability and fuel efficiency. This difficult task was solved by using several rubber compound compositions. I.e., the tread of the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance tire consists of two layers. The inner tread layer is made of a rubber compound that is not only highly rigid, like most competitors, but also has reduced heat generation. As you know, the tire heats up during movement, which causes the tread to start degrading intensively, which negatively affects the tire's service life. At the same time, all its main characteristics deteriorate significantly.
In addition, the rigid inner layer provides higher resistance to dynamic deformation, as well as promotes more even distribution of external pressure across the contact patch. As a result, the tire has become more reliable and predictable on the road. Also, the likelihood of such a negative phenomenon as uneven wear has decreased.
In turn, the outer layer of the tread is made of a more elastic rubber compound. It is characterized by the presence of a higher content of silicon-containing components, also known as silica, in its composition. The increased elasticity allows the tread to more closely fit even the smallest irregularities on the surface of the road, which ensures excellent traction, especially on wet surfaces. At the same time, due to the silica, the rubber compound has become even more wear-resistant, which has had a positive impact on the tire's service life.
Asymmetric tread pattern
Since the tire is designed for powerful cars, the primary task was to ensure a high level of safety when driving at any speed. To a large extent, this is why an asymmetric directional tread pattern was used for this tire, which has excellent performance regardless of the road surface characteristics.
One of the key features of this tread pattern is the 3D blocks. When braking, these tread elements increase the contact patch area. This solution has made it possible to significantly reduce the braking distance.
In other respects, the asymmetric tread pattern contains time-tested but very effective solutions. Like most competitors, the tread pattern of this tire consists of five functional zones - three longitudinal ribs located in the central part of the tread, and two shoulder zones.
The two central ribs, located on the outer side of the tread, have a solid and therefore very rigid design. Due to this, it was possible to achieve excellent directional stability when driving at any speed, as well as excellent responsiveness to steering wheel turns.
As is typical of high-performance tires, the shoulder zones of the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance tire have massive dimensions. This is not done by chance, since it is this part of the tread that is subjected to the greatest load, both when accelerating and braking, and when cornering. At the same time, they are divided into separate blocks by drainage channels, which form additional traction edges, which has had a positive impact on handling.
Excellent traction on wet roads
As is known, a distinctive feature of any road passenger tire from Goodyear is excellent traction characteristics on wet roads. This manufacturer was one of the first to introduce a "rain" tire for passenger cars. This model is another step in this direction. The efficiency of its drainage system can be characterized as exceptional. Unlike other representatives of this tire family, the tread of this model is distinguished by the presence of very voluminous longitudinal water drainage grooves, which can hold a significant amount of water. Subsequently, all excess moisture is removed from the tire through numerous transverse drainage channels.
