The Continental ContiEcoContact 5 tire is a high-tech summer model designed for vehicles with a sporty inclination. It is very rare to find a tire where a short braking distance on any road surface and low rolling resistance are combined. This model is one of them. The tire developers were able to optimize all components - the rubber compound, the carcass, the tread pattern, and the tire profile. All this allowed for a short braking distance and a 20% reduction in rolling resistance, as well as a 12% increase in tire life. Due to these qualities, a vehicle equipped with these tires consumes 3% less fuel than a vehicle with regular tires.
To reduce rolling resistance, the tire developers optimized the sidewalls and flanks - the rings that hold the tire to the rim. A specially created filling cord made of a hard mixture made the Continental ContiEcoContact 5 tire more rigid and reduced flank deformation, resulting in improved handling and stability. The use of original polymer chains in the rubber compound limited the movement of chemical mixture components and increased grip on wet road surfaces. Also, this rubber compound allowed for a reduction in rolling resistance and a shorter braking distance.
The application of a flat profile and optimization of tread depth made it possible to achieve a reduction in brake pad mobility, which reduced lateral and longitudinal rolling. At the same time, rolling resistance was reduced by 3%, and tire life was increased by 12%. The deformation of the tread in the contact patch was reduced by the use of very thin lamellas, which are small cuts in the tread blocks. Their edges work like windshield wipers on wet roads, breaking up the water film during movement and reducing the braking distance. Additionally, the edges of the tire blocks maintain their stability and effectively transmit braking energy, while reducing rolling resistance.
