Smart is the brainchild of two major companies - the automaker Daimler-Benz and Swatch (a Swiss watch manufacturer). Their joint efforts in 1994 resulted in the creation of Micro Compact Car AG. The first car under the Smart brand was presented in 1997, and its full-scale production started in 1998. It was developed on a "sandwich" platform, supplemented by a Tridion-type capsule safety system. During the same period, the Swiss company sold its assets to Mercedes, which became the full owner. After 5 years, the company was renamed Smart GmbH. Further development is connected with the second generation of ForTwo, which was completely redesigned. As a result, changes affected not only the exterior but also the technical components. The suspension became softer, a stabilization system, ABS, and others appeared. All this was supposed to attract potential buyers who wanted to get all the same advantages in a compact body that a regular car provides. In 2010, this generation underwent modernization and appeared in Russia in 2012. Notably, for the Russian sector, this was the first generation.

In 2015, the third generation saw the light, which was developed jointly with Renault.
