The Perodua automobile brand belongs to the Malaysian company Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sendirian Berhad, which in turn is a structural division of the Asian Proton. The firm specializes in the development and production of compact passenger cars.

History

The brand was established in 1993, and in the following year, 1994, the company presented its debut model - the Kancil, a 5-door hatchback that had the codename M2 during development. All project work was carried out by engineers from the "parent" company Proton. In its initial form, the company dealt with urban subcompacts, and its product line did not overlap with what Proton released. After being acquired by this Asian conglomerate, Perodua stopped designing all major components on its own, primarily engines and transmissions. Until that time, components from Daihatsu were used. Both companies have a history of successful cooperation. The Japanese company owned 25% of Perodua's shares in 2001, later increasing its stake to 35%. In 2004, the Malaysian brand began assembling the Toyota Avanza, which was sold exclusively in the domestic market. Currently, Perodua is developing quite successfully, selling over 200,000 vehicles annually. The majority of them are sold in the Malaysian market, however, a significant number of cars are exported to Singapore, Brunei, Mauritius, Fiji, Seychelles, and Sri Lanka.

Model Range

Today, the brand's product line includes compact passenger cars, minivans, and crossovers. Almost all cars are developed based on various Daihatsu models, ranging from the Sirion to the Terios, which in turn are "clones" of similar Toyota cars.
