History

The brand's history dates back to the late 1920s, when an agreement was signed with Ford Motor for technical assistance in organizing automotive production in the USSR. One of the plants was built in Moscow, where the assembly of Ford A and AA from American components took place. In 1933, the enterprise became a branch of GAZ and switched to assembling cars from domestic components supplied by the main plant. In May 1945, a decision was made to build a new automobile plant, which was to produce exclusively Moskvich passenger cars. Initially, the enterprise was called the "Small Car Plant", and then the "Moscow Small Car Plant". The first Moskvich cars rolled off the assembly line in 1947. The model received the index 400, being developed on the basis of the Opel Cadett 1938 and produced using equipment received by the USSR as reparations from Germany. In 1948, a van version with a semi-wooden body appeared, and a year later, a convertible. In 1954, the model was significantly modernized, receiving the index 401. The most successful period for the enterprise was the second half of the 1950s and the entire 1960s. During this period, the product line was frequently updated, and some cars were successfully sold even in European countries. In 1967, the plant produced its millionth Moskvich car, which was the Moskvich-408 sedan. The decline of the enterprise began in the mid-1970s, with the arrival of a team of managers from ZIL, who decided that new models should be front-wheel drive, despite the lack of experience in developing such cars. As a result, the development cycle of new machines was delayed for more than 10 years, despite an attempt to accelerate the process by taking the Franco-American hatchback Simca 1308 as a basis. Nevertheless, in the early 1990s, AZLK remained one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the country. However, its product line consisted only of the Moskvich-2141 model. The problems accumulated over the decades led the enterprise to bankruptcy in 2010.

In 1998, the company Renault acquired the AZLK engine shop, which was left unfinished due to the collapse of the USSR. In 2005, the assembly of the Logan sedan began there, which later included the use of domestically produced components. In 2011, the enterprise was modernized and expanded, which allowed it to double the production volumes, reaching 175 thousand units by 2012. At the same time, the model range expanded significantly, with several versions of the Logan, including the Duster, as well as the Fluence and Megane sedans and hatchbacks. In March 2022, production was halted due to sanctions, and in May of the same year, all the enterprise's assets were transferred to the ownership of the Moscow government.

Moskvich

The new owner renamed the enterprise to "Moscow Automobile Plant Moskvich". In November, it resumed operation. The assembly of the Moskvich 3 crossover began, which is a copy of the JAC JS4. In January 2023, its electric version went into serial production. In September of the same year, the product line was expanded with the Moskvich-6 sedan, a "clone" of the JAC Sehoi A5 Plus.
