The Mercury Sable is a mid-size sedan or wagon that began its production run in 1985. It was a front-wheel drive counterpart of the Ford Taurus. Generation 1

The model was based on the Ford DN5 platform. It had a fully independent suspension, with MacPherson struts used at both the front and rear. The power units were represented by a 2.5-liter engine with 90 horsepower, which was combined with a 3-speed automatic transmission, a 3.0-liter engine with 140 horsepower paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Later, a 3.8-liter engine was introduced.

The car was produced in two body styles: sedan and wagon. Moreover, the latter had design differences not only in appearance but also in a number of systems. For example, the rear suspension differed significantly from that of the sedan.

Generation 2

Despite the overall similarity to the first generation, the car was thoroughly revised. This affected its design features. There were only two engines: 3.0 and 3.8 liters, which were complemented by a 4-speed automatic transmission. The car was characterized by an energy-intensive suspension and a smooth ride. It was also produced in sedan and wagon body styles.

Generations 3 and 4

The model began to be based on the updated DN101 platform. The exterior design over time acquired more and more streamlined forms. The dimensions increased, which was reflected in the increase in cabin space and luggage compartment. There were two engines: a 3.0 with 145 horsepower and a 3.0 Duratec with 200 horsepower. They worked in conjunction with a 4-speed automatic transmission. In 2005, production was discontinued, and the Mercury Montego model was released to replace it.

Generation 5

The revival of the model took place in 2008. The car appeared in the form of a full-size sedan (the wagon was no longer produced) with front-wheel drive. An all-wheel drive option was also available. The powertrain was a 3.5-liter engine producing 263 horsepower, which was complemented by a 6-speed automatic transmission. This generation existed for a short time, until 2009, after which it was withdrawn from production, as sales did not meet the manufacturer's expectations.
