History of formation

The company was created in February 1981 as Maruti Udyog Limited, a joint venture between the Indian government and the Japanese Suzuki Motor. The state's participation in the partnership began to decline in 2003 and ceased in 2007, when the company's shares were fully transferred to Suzuki. The assembly plant started operating in 1982, using components imported from Japan. At that time, only two models were produced, which was due to the concerns of the Indian government about the fate of local automakers. Nevertheless, already in 1984, the production volumes reached 40 thousand cars. By that time, the product line included the Maruti 800, a "clone" of the Suzuki Alto, as well as the commercial "small car" Maruto Van. The following year, the off-road vehicle Gypsy, a copy of the Suzuki SJ410, appeared. In 1987, the export of automotive products began, with the first batch being sent to Hungary.

In 1989, the company introduced the first passenger car with a 3-volume body on the Indian market, the Maruti 1000. The share of local components increased from 33% to 65%. The liberalization of the Indian economy in 1991 allowed Suzuki to increase its stake in the joint venture to 50%. At the same time, production expanded, reaching a million units in 1994, and the product line became more diverse. It included not only urban "small cars" but also compact off-road vehicles based on similar Suzuki models.

The brand's product line is characterized by "Indian" specificity. It consists of compact cars, with a significant part being urban hatchbacks, "clones" of popular Suzuki Alto and Swift models.
