Summer tire test 205/55 R16 from the publisher Авторевю 2014 p.

To compare the tires, the magazine AutoRevu selected 16 sets of 205/55R16 summer tires. These included both high-end tires from leading manufacturers as well as relatively affordable tires from lesser-known brands. The goal of the test was not only to determine the best tire in each category, but also to compare all the tires under the same conditions. The first group consisted of ten high-end tires from leading manufacturers: Continental ContiPremiumContact 5, Pirelli Cint

Continental ContiPremiumContact 5
Traction and handling on wet asphalt
comfort
Insufficient wear resistance during aggressive driving
Beautiful tires for normal operating conditions.

Unconditional victory in all exercises on wet asphalt! On a winding track - an ideal balance between understeer and oversteer, the start of skidding is soft, easily predictable. In heavy rain, they floated on puddles a little earlier than Pirelli or Formula tires.

On dry asphalt - a minimal braking distance and the best comfort indicators: these are the quietest and softest tires in the test. On the dry handling track, this softness turned out to be harmful: the car's reactions are not distinguished by clarity. Moreover, after six fast laps, the shoulder area of the tread turned out to be more worn out than that of competing tires.

Pirelli Cinturato P7
Braking performance on wet roads
Handling on dry roads and Acoustic comfort
the car's tendency to skid on wet asphalt and insufficient smoothness of the ride
A good option for active drivers.

The Pirelli Cinturato P7 model has been around for five years now, but its second place in the rating confirms that the tires have undergone a successful modernization. In terms of grip on wet asphalt, they only lose to Continental tires, and they resist aquaplaning better than all others.

On a wet track, the sports character of the Pirelli tires is not always appropriately manifested - skidding is sharp, and sometimes there is an excessive tendency to skid. However, turns on dry asphalt pass like on rails. And quietly. Small seams and joints are smoothed out well, but larger potholes are noticeably felt in the cabin. A high "carcass stiffness" is noticeable.

Hankook K115 Ventus Prime 2
Traction on wet asphalt
handling on dry asphalt and acoustic comfort
insufficient reliability of handling on wet asphalt and ride smoothness
Summer tires Hankook can be put on premium class cars with a clear conscience.

Hankook Ventus Prime 2 tires provide excellent grip on wet asphalt, confidently resisting aquaplaning. On a wet track, the car's behavior is sharp - somewhat reminiscent of driving on Pirelli tires, but both allow you to drive fast.

On dry asphalt - fast and with pleasure. Reactions to steering wheel turns are clear and accurate even at a speed of 150 km/h. And for comfort, Hankook tires get the same scores as Pirelli. The noise level when rolling is the same, and the difference is that Hankook tires respond slightly harder to small irregularities, and large ones, on the contrary, pass softer.

Toyo Proxes CF2
Traction and handling on wet asphalt
Comfort and price.
insufficient reliability of handling on dry asphalt
Recommended.

The lag behind European leaders on wet asphalt is minimal, the car behaves perfectly on the handling track. On dry asphalt, Toyo tires provide confident braking, but on the handling track, slight delays in response to steering wheel turns are noticeable, and on the high-speed arc, additional steering is already required, and sometimes even drift correction.

The tires provide quiet, soft rolling. And light: in terms of rolling resistance, these tires are among the top three. The most important advantage of the model is the price. Among the "first-line" tires, Toyo Proxes CF2 is the most affordable.

Michelin Primacy 3
Tread compound traction and handling on dry asphalt and wet asphalt durability
low traction properties on wet asphalt and insufficient comfort indicators
Michelin Primacy 3 tires are particularly recommended for those who live in southern regions and enjoy fast driving. The main thing is not to overdo it on wet surfaces.

On wet asphalt, the braking distance is 2.5 meters longer than that of Continental tires, and there is a noticeable lag in handling on the track. When cornering, the front axle predominates with understeer, but there is no hint of oversteer of the rear axle, which makes it easy to drive even without a stability system.

On dry asphalt, Michelin tires are traditionally good in both the braking sector and on the handling track. And the rolling is good - only Goodyear tires roll more easily. The comfort is worse: the noise is unobtrusive, but its level is higher than that of the leading competitors.

Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance
Traction on wet asphalt
Comfort and low rolling resistance
Low braking performance on wet asphalt

handling on dry asphalt
Recommended for those who prefer a calm and comfortable ride.

Goodyear tires are traditionally strong on wet asphalt, and the Efficient Grip Performance model is no exception. On the handling track, they concede to the test leader, Continental tires, by only 0.3 seconds per lap. The car's steering responds softly and accurately.

When braking, uncertainty arises - the wheels lock up early. From a speed of 80 km/h, the Octavia stops almost five meters further than with Continental tires! On dry pavement, the situation is reversed - the brakes are fine, but in turns, the reactions become "sluggish". These are soft and quiet tires.

Matador MP-44 Elite 3
Traction and handling on wet asphalt
Traction and handling on dry asphalt
Anti-hydroplaning resistance
low level of comfort
Overall, a very good combination of price and quality. We recommend.

In terms of braking performance on wet asphalt, Matador tires rank third in the "absolute" category! And in terms of highway handling, you can drive fast. The transition to skidding is a bit sharp, but the car remains under control.

On dry asphalt, Matador tires also work excellently: braking performance is good, you can enter turns quickly without fear of skidding - the car continues to respond unequivocally to steering and traction.

Noise and ride smoothness are at a medium level.

Nokian Hakka Blue
Wet and dry handling
Low aquaplaning resistance
low ride smoothness
noisy
On wet asphalt, despite the manufacturer's claimed new technologies (polished tread grooves, special silica compound), the tires were unable to compete with the leaders on an equal footing.

The behavior of the car on the handling track was pleasing: the car smoothly transitions into skids, which are easy to control. The main thing is to avoid deep puddles: on them, Nokian tires float early.

On dry asphalt, the reactions are fast and accurate, but the movement is accompanied by increased noise and vibration. This can be partly explained by the "Extra Load" marking - the tires are designed for high loads and, accordingly, have a reinforced, more rigid carcass structure.

Yokohama C.Drive AC02
High Aquaplaning Resistance
Wet handling and low ride comfort
In braking, the tires are even better than Goodyear tires! However, on a winding track, there is a lack of grip - the car sharply skids into long skids. As a result, there is more than a seven-second lag behind the test leader on a 2.3 km long track.

And there are no complaints about the drainage properties of the tread, Yokohama tires confidently resist aquaplaning. On dry asphalt, the braking properties and handling are average, but the comfort is below average (on small unevenness, noticeable bumps are transmitted to the body). This is partly due to the fact that these tires are also high-load.

Formula Energy
High aquaplaning resistance
Traction properties on wet asphalt
The asymmetric tread of the Formula Energy tires resists aquaplaning no worse than the tread of Pirelli tires. But on wet asphalt, where the composition of the rubber mixture is important, Formula noticeably lags behind. Although in the subgroup of second-line tires, it performs fairly well. Rapid movement on wet asphalt is hindered by sharp skidding, but the car remains manageable in skidding.

On dry asphalt, the indicators are average, and in terms of acoustic comfort and smoothness of the ride, Formula tires are preferable to the more expensive Nokian and Bridgestone tires. In the overall rating, Formula tires are higher than Bridgestone: on the same step as Yokohama tires.

Bridgestone Turanza T001
Mid-grip properties on wet asphalt
low reliability of handling on wet asphalt
low ride smoothness
noise
The main problems of Turanza T001 are on wet asphalt. Even on a circle, where other tires make the car go with a slight skid of the front wheels, on Bridgestone tires it skids into a skid that needs to be corrected with the steering wheel! And on the handling track, the behavior of skidding is unpredictable: either the front end is skidding, or the rear end is skidding.

The behavior on dry asphalt is also unimpressive, and the braking distance during emergency deceleration from a speed of 100 km/h exceeded 40 meters, although all the tires of the leading five fit within 39 meters.

The tires are annoying due to increased noise on rough asphalt and excessive stiffness on uneven surfaces. The latter can be explained by the increased load-carrying capacity (Extra Load), and the Bridgestone Turanza T001 tire carcass is two-layered, while the main competitors have a single-layer carcass construction.

It remains to be hoped that the second layer will provide the Bridgestone tires with increased "impact" strength when hitting potholes or obstacles.

Nordman SX
High Aquaplaning Resistance
Traction properties on wet asphalt
handling on wet asphalt and low comfort level
The main advantage is good resistance to aquaplaning. But the traction properties on wet asphalt are not high. This is especially felt on the wet handling track - the car sharply skids into a skid, and when braking, it's not always possible to find the fine line of wheel lockup.

And on dry asphalt, the traction properties are also unimpressive - the Nordman SX tires have the longest braking distance. Plus, they are noisy and harsh.

Cordiant Sport 3
Water run-off and drainage
Traction properties on wet asphalt

handling on wet asphalt

noise
On wet asphalt, they are not high - both when braking and when cornering, there is a lack of coupling properties. On the handling track, skidding is sharp, and in the event of errors, these skids are too stretched - the width of the track is barely enough. However, on "big water", Cordiant tires work even better than Nokian, allowing you to gain 3 km/h more speed in a special bath.

On dry asphalt, the coupling properties are at a medium level, and there are no special problems with handling. Although there is no need to talk about any "sports" declared in the model name. Ordinary economy-class tires. Moreover, they are quite noisy - they hum both on smooth and rough asphalt.

Cooper Zeon CS6
Low rolling resistance and average comfort level
low aquaplaning resistance
tread properties on wet and dry asphalt
handling on wet and dry asphalt
Tires of rather mediocre quality, which are offered in Russia at an unjustifiably high price.

With such coupling properties on wet asphalt, one can compete only with second-line tires. The car brakes poorly, and in turns, it quickly slips into skidding.

On the highway, you have to drive noticeably slower than on competitor tires. But the most unexpected thing is that the tires with numerous transverse grooves "float" on puddles earlier than others.

On dry asphalt, braking is mediocre, on the highway, the car is unstable in high-speed turns: the rear axle sometimes "drifts" into a skid at the most inopportune moment. However, the comfort is not the worst - an average level of noise and smoothness of the ride.

Viatti Strada Asimmetrico
price
Traction properties on wet asphalt

traction properties and handling on dry asphalt

high rolling resistance

noise
On wet asphalt, the tread rubber works poorly - both in the longitudinal and transverse direction, the coupling properties are clearly insufficient. On the handling track, the car skids almost all the time.

On puddles, the tread, which vaguely resembles the first-generation ContiPremiumContact tires, "floats" early. On dry asphalt, Viatti tires also demonstrate low coupling properties, both when braking and on the handling track. The reactions to steering wheel turns are "smudged".

Comfort indicators are mediocre, and from the point of view of fuel economy, these tires are the most disadvantageous - they have the highest rolling resistance. The only undisputed advantage of these tires is their low price.

Sava Intensa
Acoustic comfort
extremely low traction on wet asphalt
low resistance to aquaplaning
handling on dry asphalt
The traction properties are extremely low - when braking from a speed of 80 km/h, the car will need an additional ten meters of free road! And on the handling track - the worst time. It's impossible to accelerate, but at least the skidding starts smoothly, and then the reliable grip with the asphalt returns just as smoothly.

The tread pattern did not meet expectations: aquaplaning starts very early. On dry asphalt, the braking properties are mediocre, and on the handling track, the rear axle floats at the limit. You have to tense up and correct the trajectory with the steering wheel: if you're late, the car falls into a dangerous skid.

However, when driving calmly, you can enjoy the silence in the cabin - Sava tires are not the softest, but they are one of the quietest in the test.
