Today, it's not uncommon to see buyers trying to choose tires with a tire tread depth gauge in hand. But why do they need it when choosing new tires? There's a common misconception that the more tread a tire has, the higher its resource. This, of course, is not the case. 

Tire tread depth is a tool for solving specific problems today. Like everything in a tire, a tread with a large depth has both advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include similar passability on complex dirt roads and excellent overcoming of flooded road sections. At the same time, the disadvantages are also quite tangible and unacceptable for many. First and foremost, it's noise. The higher the tread, the louder it is. With the rapid development of electric vehicles, this is hardly the main blocking factor, as all tire manufacturers strive to maximize noise reduction. The second main disadvantage can be attributed to low handling. More precisely, there is a direct dependence: the higher the tread blocks, the worse the car's handling. 

Examples can be tires close to the sports segment, adapted for electric vehicles. They have an initial tread depth in the summer segment close to 5-6 mm, while tires for SUVs can have a tread depth of 11 to 20 mm. Does this mean they have a different resource? Not at all. They perform different functions, but the question of which rubber compound is less wear-resistant is highly debatable. For electric vehicles, the most advanced rubber compounds with the best elastomers are used today, which effectively resist wear. This is mainly due to the high torque of the vehicle and the phenomenal loads on the tires from the first meters of movement.  

So, how do you choose tires with a high resource? 
Pay attention to manufacturers' communications. Any life hacks and even such indicators as treadwear have their error. You should make adjustments for this.
