In Russia, a new sealant for tires has been invented

Inventors from St. Petersburg have patented a formula for a liquid sealant for sealing large punctures in pneumatic tires, and the release of the new material on an industrial scale is planned for 2025, reports Mashnews with reference to Rospatent.

"The main advantage of our invention is the possibility of using the sealant to eliminate punctures with a diameter of up to 20 mm, — noted one of the co-authors of the invention, the general director of the St. Petersburg LLC "TSZ" Vyacheslav Krasovsky. — Now on the market there are similar compounds, but they are effective for sealing damages up to 8 mm. Often, tire wheels, especially for large trucks in harsh off-road conditions and at industrial facilities, receive punctures of much larger sizes. The new sealant will allow you to quickly solve this problem on the spot, without removing the wheel and prolonged downtime of the vehicle".

Field tests were carried out, during which a calculated amount of sealant was placed inside the tire, and the car drove onto an obstacle, and a through puncture of a large diameter formed in the tire. After the metal rod was removed, the puncture site, as noted, was sealed with a sealant in a few seconds: in 1 second with a puncture diameter of 10 mm and in 4 seconds with a diameter of 20 mm.

The control of the residual pressure in the tires was carried out for three days. The operation of the truck was carried out in the usual working mode, and the loss of pressure was noted only when the foreign object that caused the puncture was removed, and after hermetization "the wheel retained its condition".

According to the inventors, the production of the sealant involves the use of secondary raw materials, such as waste from the processing of old tires in the form of large rubber crumbs and spent alumochromic catalysts used in the chemical industry, and "the combination of all components gives the sealant an optimal balance of elasticity and hardness".

"Our sealant can be used for chamber and tubeless pneumatic tires on vehicles of all classes. Therefore, we plan to bring the product to the corporate market first, and then to the wide consumer market. The production of the sealant will start in 2025 at one of the domestic chemical industry enterprises", — said Krasovsky.

In Rospatent, it is noted that the composition of optimal viscosity, elasticity and high strength is presented in the form of a two-phase suspension: the liquid phase consists of a polyatomic alcohol and a water-soluble organic polymer, and the solid phase contains an antioxidant, aerosil, crushed keramzit, large rubber crumbs, a catalyst and other components.
