In Canada, new Pirelli winter tires are presented
Pirelli conducted a test drive of new friction tires, called Pirelli Ice Friction (not to be confused with Pirelli Ice Zero FR, which have a different tread pattern), on a polygon in Quebec. These tires are designed for use in northern winter conditions but, as the manufacturer emphasizes, combine high efficiency on snow and ice with increased durability, reduced rolling resistance, and improved acoustic comfort.
One of the features of the novelty is the two-component tread construction. The compound of the upper layer is designed to improve traction on ice, wet or cold surfaces, while the lower layer is made more rigid, which reduces energy losses. According to Pirelli, the new tires can increase the range of electric vehicles by 5 to 8%. The production of rubber compounds uses an environmentally friendly plasticizer based on vegetable oil, which helps the tires maintain elasticity over a wide temperature range.
Pirelli Ice Friction tires have a V-shaped directional tread pattern designed to quickly drain water and slush to the sides, reducing the risk of aquaplaning and slushplaning, while the lamellas capture snow, increasing the contact patch in winter conditions. Additionally, the tread design has been optimized to function effectively over a long period. As the tread wears out, additional 3D lamellas open up, which help stabilize traction, and the manufacturer claims that the tires retain 83% of their effectiveness when the minimum allowed tread depth is reached.
"Tires should provide a high level of safety from the moment of purchase to the day they need to be replaced," said Ian Cook, Pirelli's technical director in North America.
The new Pirelli tires will be available in 46 sizes, with 22 of them bearing the Elect marking, indicating their adaptability for use on electric vehicles. Tires with this designation are distinguished, among other things, by a reinforced construction that helps withstand the increased weight of electric vehicles. Additionally, the Pirelli Noise Cancelling System (PNCS) technology allows for a reduction in noise levels by placing sound-absorbing material inside the tire. According to the EU tire labeling system, the tires received a "C" rating for economy and an "A" rating for noise.
"If there's an opportunity to improve all technical aspects as well as the consumer experience, we'll do it. We're always striving to push the boundaries in all directions," Cook emphasized.
