The smartest tires
12 april 2012
For the second time in the last two months, the Japanese company Bridgestone has received an award for tires with the CAIS (Contact Area Information Sensing) system. Thanks to this innovation, automotive tires can sense the surface they are driving on at any given moment, and with the help of a special sensor located in the car's cabin, they transmit information about the state of the road surface to the onboard computer in real time. The computer identifies a total of seven types of road surfaces: dry, "semi-dry", wet, slush, freshly fallen snow, packed snow, and ice.
For this innovation, the Bridgestone corporation was recognized by the Spanish economic journal Actualidad Economica, which in its April issue published a list of the top 100 ideas of the year - those developments that have had a significant impact on increasing the practical benefits of goods. Tires with the CAIS system were recognized first and foremost. In the near future, a representative of Bridgestone will receive an award from the journal for their contribution to increasing road safety.
Recall that earlier, in February of this year, the company was already awarded a prize for the CAIS system: the journal Tire Technology International named the "smart" tire the technology of the year.
