Rules for running-in of studded tires

Popular councils advise to prepare sleds in the summer. Therefore, every motorist makes a certain list of actions before the winter season. Replaces water with non-freezing liquid, puts a snow brush in the trunk, and possibly a shovel, changes summer tires to winter ones. If you bought a completely new set of winter studded tires, then you need to remember that these tires also require a certain preparation for the start of operation.

Studded tires have special metal elements in their tread that improve traction on icy and snowy roads. When manufacturing a tire, special holes are made in it for the studs. The installation of studs in tires occurs at the last stage, after vulcanization. The tire is installed in special equipment and then a robot installs the studs in their places. Despite the accuracy and automation, not all studs can perfectly fit into their seats. Moreover, under load during rolling, forces act on the studs at a different angle than during installation. Therefore, before the start of operation of winter studded tires, it is recommended to make so-called running-in.

Almost all tire manufacturers have certain rules or recommendations for running-in. One of the most important is its duration. It is best to carry out the running-in over a distance of 600 - 1000 kilometers. The important thing is the distance traveled, not the time. The coating for driving is better to choose smooth, without large potholes and bumps. It is not recommended to drive during running-in on ice, snow or dirt. On such roads, the wheels can slip, and these excessive loads, in turn, can lead to the loss of studs. The best coating for running-in will be dry asphalt at a small negative temperature. It is worth saving the studs from heavy loads during running-in, so it is recommended to move at a speed of 60-80 km/h. Smooth starts from traffic lights and calm braking will allow the studs to take their places evenly. And when maneuvering on the road, try to change lanes smoothly and avoid skidding and slipping in turns.

Following these simple rules and recommendations will help the studs to correctly position themselves in their places. In turn, this will help them effectively perform their functions. Moreover, this will allow you to extend the life of your tire. And safe and long trips by car are exactly what every car enthusiast wants from their "sleds".
