Is it necessary to remove stones from the tread?

Even if you drive on perfect asphalt, stones in the tread are inevitable.  Is it worth removing stones constantly? Of course not, but it's worth making a habit of inspecting the tread for stone damage.

Due to the fact that stones come in different sizes and shapes, tread damage in the form of a non-penetrating puncture is far from rare. Stones can't puncture the tire completely due to the steel breaker layers, but damaging the rubber covering the breaker is enough for long-term damage. Further moisture penetration will do its job. Corrosion of the breaker layers will lead to swelling and deformation of the tread, making further tire operation simply impossible.

It's worth noting that the tread rubber layer, although it picks up more stones while driving, is still less prone to damage. As it wears out, the likelihood of both punctures and non-penetrating stone damage increases.
