New Pirelli plant in Mexico

09 july 2012
Pirelli, the Italian tire manufacturer, has opened a new factory in Mexico (Silao, Guanajuato state) on the last day of spring. This is the company's 22nd factory worldwide and its first in Mexico. The factory will produce high and ultra-high performance tires for passenger cars and crossovers.

The tires produced at the new factory will be sold on the North American market (30% in Mexico and 70% in the United States and Canada).
The Pirelli facility covers an area of 135,000 square meters. By the end of this year, the factory is expected to produce 400,000 tires, and in the future, production is planned to increase to 3.5 million tires per year. By 2017, the factory is expected to produce 5.5 million tires per year.

Pirelli's investment in the factory will amount to $300 million from 2011 to 2015. From 2015 to 2017, the company plans to invest an additional $400 million in the factory. It is also noted that the opening of the new factory will create 1,000 jobs by 2013, and after the factory reaches full production capacity, the staff will increase to 1,800 people.

— The opening of the new factory in Mexico is an important step in the implementation of the company's international development plan. This is a country that offers excellent business opportunities, both due to the positive dynamics of demand on the local market and due to its favorable geographical location, which makes it an ideal production base for serving the entire North American market, one of the most promising, in terms of the success of the premium segment concentration strategy, — said Marco Tronchetti Provera, Pirelli's Chairman and CEO, at the factory's opening.

The construction of the new factory in Mexico is another step towards the company's goal of becoming a world leader in the production of automotive tires. Recall that the company already has factories in America, in Rome. This factory also currently produces 400,000 tires, but by 2017, its production capacity will increase to 5.9 million tires per year.
