How to properly run-in studded tires

Many motorists know that studded tires need to be run-in before full-fledged operation to reduce the likelihood of stud loss in the future, and Alexey Stasyuk, the head of the customer technical support department of Cordiant, told how to properly run-in the tires.

According to him, if studded tires were purchased in advance, i.e. before the first frosts, there is no need to rush to install them. According to expert recommendations, it is necessary to "re-shoe" when the average daily temperature drops to seven degrees, after which the tires need to be run-in for the first 700 km and "it is recommended to operate the vehicle in a so-called gentle mode, i.e. without sharp maneuvers, excessive dynamics and braking, at a speed not exceeding 80 km/h".

As Stasyuk adds, it is better to run-in the tires before the onset of frost, and for running-in, "it is desirable to choose more or less even asphalt", otherwise, frequent shocks can lead to the fact that some of the studs will fall out even before the start of the winter season or will take an incorrect position in the landing place. You can make periodic trips of 20-40 km, as the tires will have time to warm up to the necessary temperature.

"The optimal way to run-in studded tires will be on roads with a small ice crust, again, in gentle conditions," notes the representative of Cordiant. "However, we perfectly understand that not all regions of Russia and not all customers have the opportunity to do this. Hence those basic recommendations that help throughout the entire life cycle to maximize the effective use of studded tires".

After running-in in the specified mode, the studs are fixed in the tread, and the risk of their loss is reduced. "This is a basic condition for all studded tires, regardless of the manufacturing companies, brands and models," Stasyuk clarified.
