Goodyear came out of losses

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company reported its second-quarter 2024 results, with revenue of $4.6 billion, down 6.1% from the same period last year. Unit sales decreased by 1.7% to 40.1 million tires. However, operating income increased by 173.4% to $339 million, and Goodyear also reported net income of $85 million, compared to a net loss of $208 million in the second quarter of last year and a loss of $57 million in the first quarter of 2024.

"In the second quarter, we made significant progress in implementing our Goodyear Forward strategy, substantially improving profitability and signing a definitive agreement to sell our off-the-road tire business [to Japanese company Yokohama for $905 million]," said Goodyear Chairman and CEO Mark Stewart. "I remain confident that we can achieve our goals and increase our operating margin to 10% by the end of next year."

In the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region, Goodyear's sales decreased by 4.6% to $1.3 billion in the second quarter, partly due to the negative impact of currency fluctuations. Unit sales decreased by 0.9% to 11.6 million tires, and the company reports that replacement market sales decreased by 1.4% due to weak demand in Eastern Europe, particularly in Turkey. In North and South America, revenue decreased by 8.2% to $2.1 billion.

For the first six months of 2024, Goodyear's revenue was $9.1 billion (80.5 million tires sold), down 7.1% from the same period in 2023, and net income was $28 million (compared to a net loss of $309 million a year earlier).

Although Goodyear returned to profitability, the company's stock plummeted 15.9% after the quarterly report was released, and its market capitalization decreased by $560 million. The reason, according to The Motley Fool, is that Goodyear is currently undergoing a large-scale restructuring to reduce costs, which has started to affect sales, particularly in the American market. Additionally, analysts say that while potential investors had previously expected a sales surge from Goodyear in the second half of the year, the announcement of the first-half results has raised doubts.
