Continental closes plant in Malaysia

By the end of 2025, Continental will stop production at its plant in Alor Setar (Malaysia), which produces passenger, light truck and motorcycle tires for the Asia-Pacific market, reports The Star.

The plant employs 950 people, and Continental emphasizes that it will support them through counseling and job placement, including within the company.

"The decision to close the Alor Setar plant was made after a thorough business analysis and will help the company maintain its competitiveness in the APR," Continental said. "By adapting to changing consumer demand, we aim to optimize our product range and production capacity in the region."

Continental adds that "Malaysia will remain a key market for the company in the APR", and in the future, "long-term relationships with customers will continue to be the foundation of the company's business in the country".

The Alor Setar plant was launched on December 20, 1979, and in May 2012, it became part of Continental. In 2019, the plant celebrated its 40th anniversary and the production of its 78 millionth tire.

In March 2024, the American company Goodyear announced the closure of its tire plant in Malaysia. At the same time, the local tire industry is receiving new investments, and not so long ago, Chinese companies Prinx Chengshan and Shandong New Continent Tire announced plans to build plants in the country.
