Cabot to Supply Sumitomo with Recycled Carbon Black
Sumitomo Rubber Industries and Cabot Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the implementation of recycled technical carbon in tire production. The raw material will be produced using Cabot's patented technology for processing technical carbon obtained from the pyrolysis of end-of-life tires, and Sumitomo intends to use it in the production of serial products in accordance with its environmental agenda.
The tire company says that for the first time, it is considering the introduction of new raw materials from Cabot, and notes that this project will play an important role in the work of both companies to reduce CO2 emissions. At the moment, the manufacturer is assessing the suitability of the new material for use in mass production, and Cabot intends to expand the use of its technologies to "meet the expected market demand".
As noted by Takuya Hariguchi, manager of the new materials development department at Sumitomo, the company, in cooperation with Cabot, will intensify research in the field of applying technical carbon from secondary raw materials. "By combining our efforts and experience, we will strive for the earliest possible introduction of this material into serial production, in order to contribute to the creation of a low-carbon society," he said.
Aatif Misdag, Cabot's vice president responsible for the development of environmentally friendly solutions in the segment of reinforcing materials, added that the company "prioritizes sustainable development, ensured through the introduction of innovations and cooperation with partners", and joint work with Sumitomo will reduce the impact on the environment in the tire industry.
Sumitomo is currently implementing the Towanowa initiative, aimed at expanding the use of raw materials obtained from used tires in the production of new products, thereby reducing environmental damage, and not so long ago, the company announced that it had begun applying recycled technical carbon for the first time in the production of serial automotive tires as part of its cooperation with Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation.
