The all-season passenger tire Pirelli Scorpion ATR is one of the successful attempts by the renowned Italian manufacturer to create a tire for SUVs, crossovers, and pickups, perfectly suited for driving on both highways and off-road terrain. This model is distinguished by an exceptionally wide range of tire sizes, starting from 205/70R15 and ending with the gigantic 325/45R24. Such a wide range of tire sizes, with over three dozen options, allows this tire to be used on the vast majority of passenger vehicles with increased cross-country ability.
Tread pattern design
Italian tire manufacturers, striving to provide the tire with excellent performance on any type of surface, preferred to use a tread with a symmetrical non-directional pattern, the design of which only vaguely resembles the letter S. The central part of the tread consists of three longitudinal ribs, each of which is a separate row of individually standing blocks.
In the very center of the tread, there is a row of blocks spaced at a very small distance from each other. This allowed for the formation of a practically solid longitudinal rib, due to which the Pirelli Scorpion ATR tire demonstrates excellent directional stability when driving on the highway. The two longitudinal ribs located next to each other also represent individual blocks, which are characterized by a complex configuration, replete with many angles and sharp edges.
The shoulder areas of the tread are distinguished by an aggressive, almost rectangular profile, which on the one hand provides a larger contact patch area, and on the other hand, its almost rectangular shape. This design solution made it possible to achieve excellent traction on dry roads, as well as optimal pressure distribution across the entire contact patch, and therefore, even wear of the tread, which significantly increased the tire's lifespan. In addition, the shoulder areas of the tread represent two additional rows of massive and high blocks, the lateral part of which contains several sharp edges and angles. Such a design of the shoulder areas significantly expands the tire's capabilities in overcoming complex off-road sections.
Highly efficient drainage system
In addition to the rapid and efficient removal of water from the contact patch, the Pirelli Scorpion ATR tire for SUVs should have a tread with good self-cleaning properties. For these purposes, the central part of the tread is equipped with two wide longitudinal drainage grooves, as well as numerous transverse curved channels. When driving on a wet highway, the curved shape of the channels promotes more rapid and efficient removal of water from the contact patch, and the large size of the drainage grooves allows the tread to easily get rid of dirt and stones that get stuck in off-road conditions.
Excellent structural strength
When creating the tire, its developers took into account the possibility of frequent off-road driving. To make the tire able to withstand any external aggressive impact without damage, its carcass was significantly strengthened. Thanks to the use of the latest synthetic materials, the strengthening of the carcass structure did not lead to a significant increase in the tire's weight. In particular, a two-layer steel breaker was used, covered with two layers of nylon fibers wound using a seamless technology. As a result, it was possible to obtain a tire capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of off-road driving without risk of damage. In addition, the robust and elastic carcass made it possible to significantly improve the comfort of driving on rough terrain due to the effective smoothing of even large irregularities.
