It's no coincidence that in the official press release of Nexen, the all-season tire for SUVs and crossovers HTX RH5 is depicted against the background of an asphalt road. It is on such types of coverage that it will demonstrate all its numerous advantages, as is the case with any other modern model in the High Terrain category. Nevertheless, a number of design features allow it to demonstrate good performance off paved roads.
Zigzag lamellas
The possibility of using this tire in winter is largely ensured by the numerous zigzag lamellas cut into all, without exception, tread blocks. They perform several functions at once. First of all, these are longitudinal traction-coupling properties on wet and snowy roads, ensured by the transverse arrangement of the edges of the engagement formed by the lamellas. In addition, these tread elements drain the contact patch, directing water into nearby drainage grooves, through which it is discharged outside the tread. This feature significantly increases resistance to aquaplaning.
As for the zigzag shape of the lamellas, this solution made it possible to significantly increase their number without compromising other operational properties. Thanks to this, the mobility of the blocks is limited, which leads to an increase in their rigidity, and along with it, the manageability on dry coatings.
Open design of the shoulder areas
In addition to the significant size, the shoulder areas are distinguished by an open design with a large number of individual elements. The blocks located here improve stability when maneuvering and turning, and due to the transverse edges formed by them, they provide maximum performance during acceleration and braking.
3D grooves in the center of the tread
The confident behavior of this tire on dirt roads is ensured not only by the sufficiently open design of the tread but also by special 3D grooves. They are located in its central part. Their main functional purpose is to remove small particles of soil that get stuck in the tread - they are simply squeezed out under the weight of the car. This solution provides increased passability of the Nexen Roadian HTX RH5 on sandy and earthen soils.
Low noise level and excellent resistance to aquaplaning
Like most other components of the tread pattern of this tire, its drainage system also performs several functions at once. First of all, it is the diversion of water from the contact patch, which is carried out through numerous longitudinal and transverse grooves. Most of the transverse drainage grooves are located at an acute angle to the direction of movement and have a curved shape, which many times increases their throughput, and along with it, resistance to aquaplaning.
Another function of the drainage grooves is to prevent resonant noises and vibrations. It is carried out by arranging the transverse grooves with a different pitch relative to each other. The curved shape and variable cross-section of these tread elements further increase the level of acoustic comfort.
