The summer passenger tire Hankook H105 Ventus V4 ES is quite comparable to high-performance models in terms of its efficiency on dry asphalt. The South Korean manufacturer was able to achieve this by introducing a range of technologies that affected the design of the tread pattern, the tire's construction, and the rubber compound. As a result, a tire was created that has excellent handling and, in addition, a visually appealing appearance.
New Rubber Compound
One of the distinctive features of this model is the tread rubber compound, which contains silicon-based components. Their presence, as well as a special technology for preparing the mixture, which ensures uniform distribution of silica, made it possible to provide the tire with excellent traction. At the same time, the tire demonstrates high traction characteristics not only on dry but also on wet roads, where, in combination with the optimized tread design, excellent traction and braking are ensured.
Traction on Various Surfaces
In addition to the rubber compound with increased silica content, the tire's tread was equipped with straight lamellas. They, forming sharp traction edges, do not harm the tire's handling and wear resistance on wet and dry surfaces.
Handling on Wet and Dry Roads
To a large extent, traction on wet and dry roads depends on the effectiveness of the drainage system, i.e., the ability of the Hankook H105 Ventus V4 ES tire to quickly remove excess moisture from the contact patch. For this purpose, the tread has a system of transverse S-shaped channels located at a sufficiently sharp angle to the wheel rotation axis. Thanks to this technical solution, it was possible to establish very fast water removal. At the same time, the curved shape of the channels reduces the likelihood of turbulence in the water flows passing through them, which significantly increases their speed.
However, before the water enters the transverse channels, it accumulates in the longitudinal grooves. Their impressive size allows them to hold a significant amount of water, which ultimately ensured the tire's excellent resistance to aquaplaning.
Ideal Balance Between Handling and Noise
Since the tire is designed for passenger cars used every day, the South Korean tire manufacturer paid considerable attention to ensuring a high level of comfort during its development. At the same time, it was very important not to harm other characteristics, in particular handling. That's why a very wide longitudinal rib was placed in the central part of the tread, the edges of which are literally filled with small triangular notches. In addition, these notches, like other tread elements located on both sides, are arranged with a different pitch relative to each other. This made it possible to almost completely eliminate the occurrence of resonant noises audible to the human ear.
Stable Contact Patch Shape
The size and shape of the contact patch play a huge role in ensuring handling, which should remain stable under any conditions. To solve this problem, the manufacturer applied a multi-layer carcass, the basis of which is a metal cord wound using a seamless technology. In addition, steel threads are located inside a special filler. This combination provided the tire with incredible stability of shape at any speed, giving it an unusually soft ride at the same time.
Above the metal cord, a steel breaker layer is located, thanks to which it was possible to make the central part of the tread very rigid. As a result, the tire demonstrates almost instantaneous reactions to steering wheel turns, as well as resistance to punctures and cuts.
The next layer is made of nylon fibers, also wound using a seamless technology. Its main task is to ensure a smooth ride and uniform distribution of load across the contact patch.
The result of all these technical tricks was a significant increase in the contact patch area, which remains practically unchanged even at high lateral accelerations. In addition, the distribution of external pressure across the contact patch has become very even. This made it possible to reduce the noise level and the likelihood of uneven wear, which, in turn, led to an increase in the tire's service life.
