Description Goodyear UltraGrip 500
The Goodyear UltraGrip 500 winter passenger tire, with its studded design, has remained extremely popular for decades due to its excellent performance characteristics. The technologies used in its development are also widely applied in the latest winter models from this renowned and respected North American tire manufacturer. This model was released in over 70 different sizes, allowing it to be installed on the vast majority of passenger vehicles with wheel sizes ranging from 13 to 20 inches.
V-TRED Technology in American Tires
The Goodyear UltraGrip 500 tire is one of the first models to feature V-TRED technology. This term refers to a tread with a V-shaped symmetrical directional pattern. According to the designers, the V-shaped arrangement of tread elements allows for more efficient removal of water, snow, and slush from the contact patch, significantly improving traction on slippery surfaces. This, in turn, enhances safety while driving, especially at high speeds.
In this case, the tread blocks are spaced at a significant distance, allowing for effective removal of not only water but also snow and slush from the contact patch.
A distinctive feature of this V-TRED tread version is the presence of rectangular blocks in the central part of the tread. Due to their massive size and transverse arrangement relative to the direction of travel, these blocks provide high braking efficiency on slippery surfaces.
3D-BIS in Goodyear
Another technological innovation is the revolutionary 3D-BIS (Three-Dimensional Block Interlocking System) technology. This technology involves ensuring reliable fixation of the tread block lamellae to each other, which guarantees the preservation of tread block stiffness. The lamellae are locked due to the presence of special bubbles on their walls, which, when the tread comes into contact with the road surface, are tightly fixed in the corresponding recesses on the opposite side. This allowed the Goodyear UltraGrip 500 tire to have excellent handling characteristics, both on dry and on wet, snowy, and icy surfaces. It also helped maintain a high level of comfort. Furthermore, the high stiffness of the blocks enabled the tread to be equipped with an increased number of lamellae, one of the main purposes of which is to provide reliable and stable traction on snow and ice. The fact is that the lamellae form additional sharp edges that can effectively grip even the smallest irregularities on the ice surface, significantly improving traction on slippery surfaces.
SATS Spike Mounting System
This tire is also one of the first winter models to feature the SATS (Stud Anchoring Technology System) spike mounting technology. This technological innovation consists of two components – an original spike profile and a two-layer tread. In this tire, the spike profile has a thickening at the lower part, which allows for more reliable fixation in the installation location, as well as adjustment of the spike protrusion height from the tread. At the same time, the spike mounting location is in the lower base layer of the tread, which is made from a harder and denser rubber compound that, in addition to providing more reliable spike fixation, more effectively absorbs shocks from large road irregularities. The upper layer of the tread is made from an elastic rubber compound that perfectly copes with small irregularities, making the movement on these tires more smooth and comfortable.
Key Features of Goodyear UltraGrip 500
- The SATS technology for anchor-mounted spikes allows for optimal spike protrusion height, ensuring excellent traction with icy surfaces;
- The optimized V-shaped design of the symmetrical directional tread pattern features a large contact patch area, the dimensions of which remain stable regardless of road surface characteristics;
- The massive blocks, arranged transversely in the central part of the tread, provide high braking efficiency on snow;
- The 3D-BIS technology allowed the tread to be equipped with an increased number of lamellae, which form multiple additional sharp edges capable of gripping even the smallest irregularities of snowy and icy surfaces;
- The V-TRED technology provides increased resistance to aquaplaning and improved traction on snow and ice;
- The wear indicator allows for a visual assessment of the tread condition, enhancing safety.
