Continental IceContact 8 — a studded winter tyre for harsh northern conditions. It is designed for passenger cars and crossovers with traditional, hybrid, and electric powertrains. The model is intended for operation on ice, snow, slush, and cold dry asphalt, where the tread is required to combine traction and predictable reactions.
The Twin Stud system features studs of two functional types. Some of them are focused on transmitting longitudinal forces during acceleration and braking, while others support lateral grip and stability in turns. The scheme of their placement is selected taking into account different driving modes. Larger and deeper blocks form a rigid base for the studs, limiting their mobility. Additionally, a chemical bond is created between the stud body and the rubber: it reduces gaps, prevents the accumulation of contaminants, and reduces the risk of loosening the fastening.
A robust V-shaped tread pattern is supplemented by numerous lamellas arranged at different angles. Such a scheme forms working edges of several directions and helps maintain traction along with stable handling when the winter road surface changes. The rubber compound uses a system of plasticizers and a specially selected highly elastic polymer. Its task is to maintain the necessary softness of the tread in severe frost, so that the blocks and lamellas continue to work in the calculated mode.
