Polestar Polestar 2 is a 5-door liftback produced by the Swedish company Volvo since spring 2020. The production is carried out at a fully automated plant in China.

Creation History

The car was first presented as a concept in 2016. Volvo Concept 40.2 was developed by Thomas Ingenlath together with another concept with the index 40.1, which later transformed into a subcompact crossover XC40 under the "parent" brand. In turn, the recently established Polestar brand "got" 40.2. Since both concepts were extremely similar to each other, it was necessary to change the rear lights, radiator grille, and wheel design, which made it possible to visually separate the car from Volvo models, while preserving the "signature" features of the Swedish brand in its appearance.

Main Features

The serial car presented in the winter of 2019 became the second model of the sub-brand, differing from the predecessor, which is a "hybrid", by the presence of a fully electric power unit. Depending on the version, the liftback was equipped with one or two electric motors. In the standard version, the car had front-wheel drive and an 78 kWh battery, which provided a range of 470 km. The second electric motor drove the rear axle, which slightly reduced autonomy but significantly increased dynamics.

Restyling

In the winter of 2023, the brand presented an updated version of the car. The key innovations affected the power unit. In the standard version, the model had rear-wheel drive. At the same time, the power of the electric motor was significantly increased - by 68 hp, to 299 hp. This allowed to reduce the acceleration time to "hundred" by 1.1 seconds, bringing this figure to 5.9 seconds. In addition, a different long-range battery with a capacity of 82 kWh appeared in the list of additional equipment. The 2-motor modification became a bit more powerful - 421 hp and 740 Nm, mainly due to the modernized battery and asynchronous electric motor, which allowed to reduce the acceleration time to "hundred" to 4.3 seconds. At the same time, the possibility of forcibly disconnecting the power unit on the front axle appeared, which slightly increased the range, up to 481 km when using a high-capacity battery.
