Tires on Datsun on-DO (Датсун)

The serial production of the Datsun on-DO sedan began in 2014. It became the first model of the revived Datsun brand on the Russian market and one of the most affordable cars developed by the Renault-Nissan alliance in conjunction with AvtoVAZ. The technical basis of the car was the platform of the Lada Granta model, however, the on-DO received a significantly redesigned exterior design, different chassis settings, and a number of differences in equipment.

The main task of the project was to create an affordable car with a Japanese brand and an improved level of comfort compared to the base Granta. As a result, engineers made a number of changes to the body structure, suspension, and noise insulation to adapt the model to the requirements of buyers who expect more comfort from a Japanese brand car in everyday use.

External style and differences from the original model

Despite the common platform, the on-DO received its own stylistic concept. The front part is completely original: it uses the branded hexagonal radiator grille of Datsun, a massive bumper with expressive lines, and a different shape of the headlights. The rear part has also been redesigned. The sedan has an enlarged trunk with a volume of about 530 liters, which made it one of the most spacious in its class. The lights and the design of the trunk lid also differ from those of the "Granta". Inside, the changes are less noticeable, but they are present: a different instrument cluster, a redesigned central console, and new trim materials. In more expensive trim levels, decorative inserts and improved seat upholstery are available.

Technical features

Like the "Granta", its Japanese version is built on a modernized platform of the Lada Kalina family. However, engineers have made a number of improvements aimed at increasing comfort and stability of the car's behavior on poor roads. The suspension has received changed characteristics of shock absorbers and springs, thanks to which the car has become softer to respond to irregularities. Also, the settings of the steering control have been changed to make the car's reactions more predictable. In the front, an independent suspension of the MacPherson type is used, and in the back - a semi-dependent beam. This scheme is well suited for a budget sedan, providing sufficient reliability and simplicity of maintenance.

The engine range consisted of several 1.6-liter gasoline "fours" developed by AvtoVAZ and Nissan, producing 82, 87, or 106 horsepower. The Japanese engine was the only one in the line that could be combined with a 4-speed "automatic" from Jatco. In turn, domestic engines worked in a "pair" with a 5-speed manual transmission of AvtoVAZ's own design.

Equipment and level of comfort

One of the tasks of the developers was to increase the level of comfort compared to the original model. As a result, the car received improved noise insulation of the engine compartment, wheel arches, and cabin. Depending on the trim level, the Datsun on-DO could be equipped with an ABS system and distribution of brake forces, airbags, air conditioning, heated front seats, a multimedia system with a touch screen, electric windows, and a parking sensor. This set of equipment allowed the car to successfully compete with other budget sedans on the Russian market.

Nevertheless, the model was created as a practical car for daily use. A high ground clearance, energy-intensive suspension, and a simple atmospheric engine make it well-suited for roads with poor coverage. A large trunk and a spacious rear row also became important advantages of the model. Thanks to these features, the car was in demand among buyers who needed an inexpensive and spacious sedan for family or work.
